Any hunters around here?

Any success this season?

Type of weapon?

There is lots of talk of gun control etc but no thread for those who actually shoot their weapon.

Hell yes! It's basically just breast. I like to broil them with a little Mrs Dash for spice and wrapped in a couple strips of bacon or it gets a little dry. That is if they aren't cooked for bush lunch over a fire.

We got elk with the .303. We still have moose and grouse still from last year. Kokanee and trout left over from spring.
Roast grouse recipe (guessing you already have it plucked and whatnot):

tie the bugger up so it can't run away
2 ounces of butter
a couple tablespoons of red currant jelly (blacks ok, too)
4 strips of bacon
2 slices of bread
sprinkle of rosemary
sprinkle of thyme

heat oven to 400 F
rub some butter (or bacon grease) on the inside of the bird
add the jelly to the inside of the bird
seasonings on top
bacon topping the works

Put in a roasting pan and cover with foil. Roast for 15 minutes per pound.
Toast the bread and simmer the giblets in water till tender. Mash them with the butter, season the goo with wahtever you like, spread on the toast, and put the grouse on top of the toast.
Roast for another 15 minutes.
Use the stock to make gravu or bread sauce. Serve on the toast with spuds and whatever else you like.

Yep. I love grouse hunting....I have an Russian Baikal SxS 12 ga. I paid 100 bucks for brand new 30 years ago........loaded with 1 1/8 oz of # 7 1/2 it is deadly on grouse, and is therefore my favourite firearm out of 25, some worth thousands.

I have a choice in deer rifles...........A Remington Model 700 Mountain rifle in 7 x 57mm Mauser topped with a 4 power Leupold scope is the favourite....but I have a Ruger Ultralight Model 77 in .308 Winchester scoped with a Leupold 2.5X Compact that weighs 6 1/2 lbs scoped. loaded, slung... :) And a loaner, a Remington Model 7 in .308.

Am not a serious deer hunter anymore....get out once or twice a year,,,,shoot if the deer commits suicide....just don't have the same drive for it I did as a young man.

My girlfriends brother just got back from moose hunting, no moose kills but he killed a few grouse.

The Bro-in-Law couldn't find a Moose to bag?
Just looking in the wrong place?

12 ga. for a bird a km and a half or two? wow We use the .22 or rocks. I used to have a .410/.22 over and under but I gave it to daughter. Les hit a grouse with #6 shot out of the 12 one time and the bird disappeared in a puff of feathers.

We use the 30-30 or the .303 for just about everything. If we use the .303 for deer we use a low power heavy bullet. Different for elk. Most friends use .303s, 30-30s, or .270s on deer. We have mule deer and whitetails.

Deer are a dime a dozen around here so it isn't really a special deal. Elk is fairly plentiful and moose is a treat. So we won't go out of our way to bag a deer either.

Scopes? This is a hunting thread. Do you pack boxes of shells and rattle around the woods too or can you get by with 3?

Haven't hunted in quite a while but when I lived in the bush I hunted grouse with a single shot 22 short to the head, a BSA (1916) 303 for bear (shot to the eye).

I was going to mention the scopes too but I thought it was too obvious. Our Winch. 30-30 is the standard open V sights and the Lee-En 303 has peep sights. Our long range Anschutz target rifles have scopes (.338 Lapua and Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x scopes).

Sure, why not? Surer kills from farther away. That's what I use, a Remington 870 with 7½ shot for grouse, 4 or 6 shot for ducks, 2 or 4 magnum loads for geese, depending on how close I think I can get to them. It's illegal around here to use a rifle on migratory birds or water birds, and I don't think it's a good idea to shoot anything with a rifle unless you can see where the bullet's going to land. Birds on the wing, or sitting up in trees as grouse often do, are out. Safety first.

Well now, that got some attention....

Yes I know the 12 is maxed out for grouse........to make matters worse the thing is choked Full and Modified........ :)

BUT I use the lightest loads available in the smallest shot size.....cheaper than any other shotgun ammo.......and I have never blown a bird apart with it........the modified gives me good wing shots (which I habitually miss :)), the full gives me range, and when they are close? Use the Full, Shoot the head off. I don't miss 'em on the ground. And the gun weighs less than 7 lbs, is a joy to carry, well balanced.......and I can carry a couple of #2 Mags for coyotes.......

I would not trade it off for any other shotgun.....

Well, maybe a SxS in 28 ga........but it would have to be just right......

I carry 15 rounds....fully load the rifle and I have a little soft folding 10 round bullet pouch (silent) on the belt.........

A good scope, properly zeroed, in the hands of someone that knows how to use a scoped rifle, greatly improves your chances of a good hit....full stop. Single sighting plane and all that. That means less chance of wounded game. Guys that think they shoot as well with iron sights as they do with a good scope are deluded. Or not properly trained.

I also have an ancient .30-30 Winchester 94 with standard buckhorn sights.....been meaning to get an aperture sight put on it.
