No, it's fiction...

Yet it would not surprise me one bit if someone, somewhere, regarded Alice in Wonderland as an historical document, chock full of truths and spiritual allegory...

The subject of "Ifriet" or sprite (or the stout genie or demon) is mixed with much of myths, fables and fairy tales; most of them are false.
But evenso genies (or demons) do exist; and we are told about them in the Quran in addition to the Bible.
http://man-after-death.t35.com/1.htm#Genies_[or_Demons]_

I ask all those who have denied this: "Haven't you ever encountered some of such observations as may be ascribed to genies (or demons)?"

The subject of genies or demons is accompanied by a fearful side: many of deniers may say so only to assure themselves so that they may not fear.

Moreover, it is not an essential part of belief; more essential is the belief in angels; as in the Quran 2: 285

The explanation: (The messenger [Mohammed] has now believed in that revealed to him from his Lord, and the believers [have also believed.] Each one [of them] believes in God and His angels and His Books [:Scriptures] and His messengers [:apostles],
[They say:] 'We make no discrimination concerning any one of His messengers.' [: 'We believe in them, all.']
They say, 'We hear and obey. Our Lord, grant us Thy forgiveness; To Thee is [our] final resort [after death.]'.)

Genies (or demons) may assume the form of some animals like cat, goat or snake …etc; this is because people in general are afraid of them if they suddenly appear before them.

I know someone: a teacher; who worked with us as assisstant in some group of clinics; he told us that when he was child, his family dwelt in an old poor house [in the region of the Karkh at Baghdad – a quarter called Juaifir, and it was dark, and he searched for a match box, when a hand extended to him in the darkness and gave him the match stick, and he ran away startled with terror.

Another one: when I was in the military obligatory service; I was a doctor in a medical unit in the 80s; one of my friends: was an agricultural engineer (also in this obligatory military service) in the same unit.

He told me when he was child; he heard many nights someone coming down the stairs at midnight; he asked his family who too were aware of the same thing: they said: "there is nothing"; so he made some trick: he closed the door of the stair or the ladder, and put behind it some cans and metallic pieces, so that when this person comes down the stairs as usual, he will push the door open, and the cans behind it will fall, and by this way he will prove it to his family.

At mid-night that person came as usual descending the ladder step by step, and the boy expected that the door will be opened and the cans will fall causing a loud sound; but the steps stopped just before the door; the door was not pushed, and the cans did not fall; and in one minute there was someone with his breathing near his face, and the boy shrunk in his bed; but that person took some bag with slippers and shoes [that was nearby] and hit the boy with it.

I asked him: "Did you see who was that person?" he said: "No. I was much fearful."
And when he asked his family more and insisted and told them: they said: "He is a righteous angel; who used to open the water tap and wash for the dawn prayer!!"

I told Abu abd-Allah: he said: "This is an evil genie: or devil; for why did he hit the boy?" then he said: "Some of genies fall in love with some beautiful women; and may appear before them as angels to teach them the prayer!!"

I can tell you many of such stories, and you cannot say all these are lies or delusions.

But I say, it is for some wisdom that God – be glorified – has concealed this world from us; so let it be like that and it will be much better.

I shall give some examples in the subject of "The patron saint", as regards some miracles ascribed falsely to the patron saint, when they in fact are the work of genies that are associaters.
