High-profile Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is leaving city hall to run for the Ontario NDP in the provincial riding of Toronto Centre.

In a message to supporters Friday, the Toronto Centre Ward Councillor said it has become evident to her that there are deep structural changes needed that Toronto cannot deliver on its own.
“System change and legislative reform desperately need to happen at the provincial level,” Wong-Tam said. “We need to reintroduce rent control on all rental units and introduce commercial rent control to support small businesses and our main streets. We must tackle the homelessness and housing crises with investments in supportive housing, mental health services and addiction recovery beds, and we need a provincial government that works with the best interests of communities and municipalities in mind.”
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said Wong-Tam has been a “fierce” worker on behalf of residents in the ward.

“She has advocated for tenants and businesses alike,” Horwath said. “She is passionate about the urban space, about green space, about affordable housing, about access to health care for all.”
The current NDP MPP for Toronto Centre, Suze Morrison, has decided not to run again.
The federal riding of Toronto Centre is currently held by Liberal MP Marci Ien and the provincial riding has been previously represented by former Liberal cabinet minister George Smitherman.
The next provincial election is June 2, and Wong-Tam has made her resignation effective May 4.
Municipal voters go to the polls on Oct. 24.
