interesting stuff. I didnt know about it. Weird that there's no levy on DVD's. I put all my stuff on DVD's, my music stays on the hard drive.

even weirder that you can copy a cd for yourself but not for a friend, even if the cd isnt yours. It's like saying "you can take that apple, but i'm not allowed to give it to you"

Intellectual property....

OK everyone take a sharp object and insert it into your eyes until you can only see part of the Mona Lisa or the Grand Canyon or the Pyramids, or anything else that these drug using anarchists who couldn't write nor carry a tune figure their artists..claim as intellectual property.

Theives and liars just like politiicans.

Yeah I forget sometimes how old and out of touch I am with the world...

I'm quite pleased that fewer and fewer people are reading my contributions to CC...let's me know how fossilized I've become....:)

wow, the company you worked for was running some sort of legacy application that wouldn't run on a 32 bit operating system I take it?

nah. It had some instruments which were so old they could only be run by windows 3.1, or, more likely, they could have upgraded but were too stupid, uncaring and ignorant, they couldnt/wouldnt do it.

Ah the good old days. I think my first computer was a 386 something or other, and seven, three and a half inch discs would put in Windows 3.1. I'd better stop here.....I'm starting to remember the 3.1 file manager....and....? :)

first computer i used was a BBC at school. first real computer was a 286. The first one my family owned was one of those old word processing things, a PCW8256, with a green screen, and later, one of the first ever inkjet printers. we were very proud of it. weirdly it worked better than most of the ones u buy now.

i'd say it'd be better to give us an update for XP which gives us translucent windows.

There is software available which allows you to skin XP to whatever you like. I have seen skins which look almost identical to Vista, including the transparency.

RAM can really make a difference in how a computer operates, even in older pc's which may seem to be past their prime. Most computers sold now come with 2gb of RAM, which is the ideal ammount for running Vista in my opinion.
That's what I have. I have room for 2 more cards, though. Not too up on all the terminology and whatnot but I heard this PCI express helps to speed something or other up too. Also running dual processors is supposed to speed up something. This videocard carries its own - 512 MB it says and that's sposed to help keep the speed up.
Anyway, after all the crap I've had to put up with whichever OS from MS I had at the time, I've managed not to have any problems with speed. I updated my drivers for the sound and promptly ran into problems with sound. It's an Audigy 2 card. I updated my drivers for the vidcard and now everyone in videos is blue and the other objects in vids are weird colors, too. The friggin thing won't recognize an empty dvd disk and that's after an update from MS itself.. Sorry, but once I figure out how to fix these bugs I'm not likely to want to change a friggin thing concerning operating systems, especially installing one with more stupid bells and whistles.

PCI express is has a faster bus, which allows video cards and other add's to have more bandwidth, speeding up certain operations. Most CPU's released now are contain 2 cores on one physical chip, this greatly increases certain types of applications, such as video encoding.

You mention problems with your video & audio card? I can't tell from your post if you have installed Vista yet or not. If you are running Vista, you need to install the Vista drivers for both cards, otherwise you will have problems.

Some of my stuff makes a bit more sense now, Durk, thanks. But, It'll be a cold day in hell when I put Vista on here after I get the glitches fixed. I've been running XP home for 3 years I think and still have problems when I update or upgrade things. Took me about that long to get all the bugs worked outta Win98, too. MS hates my guts, I can tell.
