Wikipedia has decided to delete the page titled ‘Forward (generic name of socialist publications.)’
Wikipedia wrote this morning that after reading many comments and “various good points made on either side,” they deemed that there is “little or no connection between the disparate publications of the same or similar name other than similar ideological outlooks.”
That seems awfully peculiar that this happens right now, just weeks after Obama’s campaign announced their slogan would be ‘Forward.’ The page has been up for almost a year and a half, so why now?
Wikipedia says that, “while the publications listed in the article are indeed individually notable, there does not appear to be a unity between them except in terms of sharing some name and being socialist in character.”
So, Wikipedia, you expect me to believe that there is no unity between all of the publications even though they shared the exact same name and socialist political ideology? I’m not buying it. This never would have happened if Obama’s campaign slogan were something other than ‘Forward.’
Although Wikipedia maintains the individual articles in a ‘Disambiguation’ page of ‘Forward’ on which the various publications are listed.
Many students and professionals across the world go to Wikipedia to gain an understanding of a situation. Since Wikipedia is not a viable source of research, one would have to go elsewhere to obtain more substantial data, but Wikipedia can be a great resource to become acclimated to a topic.
Suppose you were a high-school student doing research on communism for a dreaded ‘term-paper.’ The student may look up that Vladamir Lenin famously started a publication whose title translates to ‘Forward,’ and that title was used as a sort of motif throughout socialism in Europe over the next few decades. Would that information not be useful to a student?
Leave Obama’s slogan off of that page, put it on their ‘Campaign 2012’ page, do whatever, just don’t take down a page of information strictly because the Democratic president used the word as his slogan.
Like I said in a prior article about this topic: I don’t think that anyone on Obama’s campaign team wanted to make a reference to communism or socialism. But what it does say is that their team was ignorant in choosing a title. A simple ‘Google’ search would have shown the unintelligent marketing squad that the word ‘Forward’ could possibly have ties to socialism, which could create an argument.
It is representative of the administration to make a petty mistake like this that could have easily been avoided with a 5 second internet-search.
