I read an interesting article here and it got me thinking...

I am not talking sattelite radio or XM or whatever (I'm roughly 15 years behind the tech curve on most stuff), just straight-up broadcast radio...

I remember in the late 70's and early 80's there were actual different stations all up and down the FM dial, and the article sort of explained the reason for this in a way I'd never heard (the FM/AM conundrum and resulting laws)

I don't intend this to be political in ANY way, either, so I'll get to my point-

Does you local assortment of radio stations suck ROCKS?? And is it just me, or is there basically ONE station per "Brand" in every market?? We have ONE "Classic Rock" station, one "Modern Rock" station one "Hard Rock/Metal" station (pretty much the same as the "modern Rock" one only slightly more emphasis on slightly more current music) and one "Jazz" station, plus a couple of stations playing Dance/Rap stuff...
(I'm focusing on FM btw since AM still seems to be a bit more free-form, lots more local content etc)

Our local "rock station" (and with consolidation, the ONLY one on the dial locally) stinks to high heaven.. as an example, they thought it would be a good idea to run the "top 1500 songs of ALL TIME" to commemorate their 15th anniversary- soundslike a FINE tribute, but once they realized that their entire playlist was under 500 songs it got a little goofy- they ended up having to break their beloved mega-power rotation of the Who and STP and start playing stuff like Otis Redding and Bananarama just to make good on the "countdown" (I know this from a buddy who worked there at the time, no conjecture whatsoever)

So, how bad does your local selection of stations stink?? (and you'd think being in a really concentrated area there'd be SOMETHING here, but I have yet to find it)

most of ours are playing formula music: one does modern country, one middle of the road rock, one does classic rock from the '60s to the '80s..but we do have Rogers talk radio, the Pirate[playing rap and good alternative music] and a college station[which plays everything].the one Am station plays only oldies.

I used to like CIUT and CKLN out of Toronto, but somwheres a few years back I stopped being able to get the signal, and our local CFBU is pretty stinky, sounds like a bunch of folks with really limited musical tastes doing a "cool, I'm on the radio" kind of thing
