RE: Why do we pay Hockeys

Guess more parents should send their kids to little league instead of hitting the books. ;)

And I see people comparing the salaries of average doctors to the best athletes in their sport on the planet.

Compare the best doctors salaries to the best athletes. Both make millions. (Yes, doctors make millions)

Compare an average or less than average doctor to an average or less than average athlete. The doctor makes 6 figures, but the athlete earns....nothing, in most cases. Seems like the doctor wins out here.

And if you still think it isn't fair, quit your job and be a pro athlete. What? Can't do that? THAT'S why the ones that can make so much.

I'm not complaining about not making the money. I just feel that right now I have no choice but to support the entertainment business. Everything you purchase general has advertisement cost to do with entertainers, athletes being one of them. Look at the super bowl. Every company is making enough money to sponsor that game. Who ends up paying for that advertisement. We all do if we are living and breathing with 1/2 an IQ. Wouldn’t it be great if you could watch a game with zero advertisement. Wouldn’t it be great if Ford or GM was the leading sponsor for Youth development in sports? Promoting healthy living so that most kids don’t become fat couch potatoes by the time there 20. I know that won’t happen. But the next time you buy a car ask them how much of the cost of that car goes into advertising. Society has been brain washed and we just keep paying for it.

I totally agree that we pay way to much to anyone that playes sports, take the England football team for instance, a bunch of w**kers anyway and they played like W**nkers too simply because they didnt want to get hurt incase they could not play in the next game for the team they play for, they totally did not try at all. I cant stand football at the best of times, but will support England in the world cup, they didn't even deserve to get where they did. It sickens me that someone that kicks a ball around for 90 mins gets £30.000 per week while a fireman or policeman work long hours and everyday put there lives at risk to keep us safe, and for what? not much I can tell you.
Its a screwd up world we live in!!

I think you can fix the problem because there is no problem to be fixed.

Market Value is what it is, one of two things need to be done to stop sports players making more than doctors firemen, and police.

1.) train the public not to want to become a doctor fireman or policeman so that less people will do it and the marketvalue of each of those will increase.

2.) Somehow make a lot more people really good at a bunch of sports, so again the supply of worthwhile players is much higher and there is more competition to get the job, (therefore lower wage), oh you will also have to train EVERYONE not to celebritize people anymore.

The sport industry is messed up....we dont teach the athletes....we get them to entertain us by playing their respective sport.....

TEACHERS are the ones who teach us....

I don't mind if the market allows certain individuals to make outrageous money for a short period during their lives. Tax policy should take care of the most annoying anomalies. As long as said individuals in music or sport or movies don't think, that because they're making such an income, that their opinions are suddenly news as well.

Yes I under stand the NHL does. But where do they make most of there money. We all pay for there wages with all the products that advertise . Next time you go into Canadian Tire to pick up some bags of dirt. Realize a % of that dirt is going to pay a small part of some one scoreing a goal agaist your home team.

Nobody's forcing you to spend money on specific products or hockey tickets; it's a free market. Corporations can shell out millions of dollars when it comes to celebrity endorssments if they like, and if you have a problem with it, don't buy their products.

RE: Why do we pay Hockeys

Seems pretty simple.

We pay teachers.
We don't pay hockey players.

Hockey players have to fend for themselves without any money from the government.

But teachers, doctors, firemen, etc. are of value to the society. In terms of economics hockey players will get paid more because there are fewer of them, but that doesn't mean they deserve it. Hockey playing, were it not for the people who like to sit and watch it, is an entirely useless skill.

Grit86 we are being force to support a group of people and the lives that they have. YOU are fooling yourself if you think otherwise. List ten products that you buy and not a penny from those product support an athlete or entertainer.

If a company can make enough money to employ an athlete to promote their product, why shouldn't they?

You seem to think that you still own the money you trade for products and that the corporation that you traded with is responsible to you for how they spend it.
NEWSFLASH: It's their money, not yours. If they spend their money promoting their product, who are you to say anything about it? Your money goes to buying things you need and their money goes to promoting products so chumps like you will pay lots of money for them.

There are many products that are cheaper than celebrity endorsed brand name ones. Why don't you start buying them instead of whining about how "your" money goes to support athletes.

What a non-issue.

If you don't like it don't watch. If you don't wanna support an athlete don't buy the shoes s/he endorses. You all have the choice, exercise it.

If you really want to, offer to sponsor your favorite local doctor. Pay him $100 to put up a picture your kid drew in his office. Donate to the Policemans Association, put money in the firemans boot.

Buy your shoes and clothes second hand. Remove all forms of culture from your life. Don't buy books, go to the theatre, rent movies, sports, ballet. Don't buy make-up or deoderant or toilet paper stop shaving whatever it is you shave. Sell your car, bike and scooter. make your own clothes but don't buy a sewing machine. Drink tap water instead of bottled, sports drinks, energy drinks or soda. grow vegetables in your garden. Hand mill your own cereal.

Now have a fun life.

I think a baseball game should be on somewhere in this 500 channel universe. I'm going to the fridge to get a Silver Bullet, gonna sit back in my La-Z-boy, admire my Air Jordan's (do they still make those?) and buy everything I see advertised on TV next time I go shopping.

You fight the power. I'll go with the flow.

RE: Why do we pay Hockeys players more than we pay a teacher

I think atheletes should get paid the big bucks and teachers and policemen should get paid less. Heres why, Humility.

Teachers (and to an equal but different extent policemen) forge the very bones of our society. Teachers raise the children really, and policemen enforce our societies laws and values. You do not want people seeking these jobs out for anything other than the importance of the jobs and a desire to help society. If your biggest concern is a giant paycheck, I would rather you did something unimportant, like play sports.
