Back to School Time!!

So what is your local school feeding the kids this year?

Many schools are changing their menus and vending machines away from the junk food that creates such big problems in health and behavior. This is acknowledgement of what junk food is, and where it comes from, and indictment on corporate morality.

Please support any efforts in schools to bring in whole foods, which this study has found helps kids learn better - DUH!!! [we knew that years ago, but it was not 'made public'].

RE: whole foods help stud

I'm in highschool, and my cafeteria has a "healthier options" line, which is really bullshit, as all it is is simple carbs that don't taste as good as the "eviller" simple carbs (macaroni salad in white pita, etc)
None of it's whole.
Our school's also a bitch for the Cocacola company, which has a complete monopoly on the drinks at our school, with products like Nestea, Minute Maid "juice", and Five alive. The only thing coke DOESN't make in our drink stand is our Quebon chocolate milk.
I think this year, since I've got journalism, I'll make a tear in the caff with the Coca Cola corporation's international behavior; that and the fact that none of the things our administration has them provide us are healthy.

Won't do no good to re-do the cafeteria menu. Kids won't eat the food anyways. At my old high school, I hated the cafeteria food, so I pretty much ate across the street at McDonald's every day. So did many other kids. Except on pizza day, that was the one day of the week I ate lunch at school.

If kids need to eat processed foods at least they can eat processed food that tastes good (burgers/fries). Not some cardboard tasting pre-frozen meatloaf or other tasteless high school cafeteria food.

Well I'd say that adequately explains a few things about you...

What? You never watched Chef Oliver's assault on the school cafeteria system in britain? They LEARNED AND LOVED.

You are no doubt referring to "The Naked Chef", Jamie Oliver. Yup, I have watched his show on the Food Network several times (Emeril rules, but I still watch Jamie Oliver occasionally). There is no way school cafeterias will ever have the quality of food prepared by professional chefs such as Oliver.

As I noted earlier, the school cafeteria food is all processed (or at least it was when I went to high school), so it is not exactly the healthiest food to eat. Why eat food that is not healthy if it tastes bad? It makes no sense??? Might as well have pizza, burgers, fries ...etc).

...and for those who have seen the movie Supersize Me, you know the reason why...NEOCONS!!!

Speaking of supersized ... why doesn't McDonald's offer supersized fries and drinks anymore when ordering a combo??? I had always ordered the supersized combo, particularly for the soft drink. It's very convenient when you order at the drive thru since you don't have the option of getting a refill on the soft drink. Simply "large sizing" a combo is not the same. I prefer Carl's Jr. anyways.

School boards are blockheads when it comes to food. They need to bring in foods that are low in fat, sugar and sodium (salt). Sure kids can buy their junk from other stores, so what! Schools should not encourage poor eating habits and obesity.

Schools have a captive audience, they can't lose. Students wil spend money if schools can hire cooks who can cook decent food. Why is this so tough?

schools buy cheap food, regardless of the health benefits. This is something that has been very big in the medi in the UK recently and has begun to turn around on. the problem is overcoming the status quo. what seems to help is education of the staff who actually do the cooking. they need to know the benefits of healthy food AND how to cook it. Also the parents need to cook decent food at home, rather than producing burgers and turkey-twizzlers

The nail on the head Hermann, is parents. I have a solution for cheap school meus, pack your kids a healthy lunch and stop being lazy parents relying on the schools to feed your kids.

but u can't defeat the problem with JUST parents, because the fact that there are some people out there who think a bag of chips and five chocolate bars is a good lunch will not change. parents will always consist of good AND bad, which is why we need the schools to try as well.
