Never seen 9 months of rain?
I have, and have gone weeks without seeing the sun (unless I drive higher than the clouds). The fog is thick and depression is common.

I only take the Ferry once a year because of the cost. I would go over more often if it was cheaper.
I price compare all the time with my mother in Alberta. Groceries are similarily priced. Our gas is ALWAYS more expensive. She is at 82.9, we are 99.9....just dropped from 101.9.

I wasn't born here so I seem to be more effected by the weather. The locals don't notice it nearly as much as I do.

I lived on the west coast of V.I. for 6 months at Head BAy (near Tahsis) and the worst I saw was solid rain for 6 days and nights straight, but we were there during the dry months of the year.:lol:

I saw a gorgeous house online in Osoyoos Okanagan Valley, but I think it's a scam at the price that was posted.

Where is that?

Thanks

Michelle

About 10 years ago we looked for real estate in Osoyoos- VERY expensive OR situated miles out of town on top of a rock pile. Nothing in between.

Osoyoos is the town farthest south in the Canadian Okanagan Valley. It's about 2.5 to 3 hours away from the Costco in Kelowna. Not sure about American side. It gets blistering hot there in the summer (high 30s low 40s). Very little rain or snow (semi arid). Lots of sun. Lots of tourists. It's right on the border. Lots of lakeside.

Vancouver Island
We stayed in osoyoos one year for a week, (summer), and will never go back, as
it was so hot, one couldn't do anything but lie around in the lake.
Went into town once, got out in a hurry, back to the lake.

1-Nanaimo has a Costco. A nice one too.
It is known as the Land of Many Malls. Excellent shopping and access to movie theaters.
2- Gas is very expensive.
3- I'm in the Valley of Port Alberni. Beautiful mountains, trees, water. Low housing costs, but high property taxes.
4-I guess one never needs to leave the Island. I only go to visit family, but if you ever want to see a pro hockey game, a great concert, or a big City.....
5-Rent I am unsure of, but it does sound like you are getting a great deal!

We are getting more 100 mile dietish out here. We have lots of small farms that we can buy meat, fruit and veggies from. A Farmers Market every Sat.
It's nice to hear you say some nice things about Nanaimo. I do agree with you that there isn't a lot in Port. I've lived in Ucluelet also. It's a given that it will usually either be raining or snowing on the hump.
Pro hockey games are too expensive to go to even when you live in Vancouver. LOL
I've been reading the paper since this thread started and I was taken back by the drop in rents and by the number of available places. I guess people in the forestry industry are having to go elsewhere.
Gas is more expensive all over BC and it may cost more in Port Alberni than here - I have no idea. I have not been out that way in at least 3 years.
Michelle: Any vehicle that comes on the ferry is by length and by height. Normal height doesn't change the cost but excess does. A regular length truck or car doesn't change the cost. If you add a trailer to your pick-up for example, you will pay considerably more. You can look up bcferries and find out rates. You asked why you have to travel by ferry. Well - this is an island where there is no extension of the highway. To get here you must travel by boat. It's a large island but it's still an island and the reason why it's called Vancouver Island. No where is going to be perfect. There will always be something about each place that isn't quite right. I've lived in a number of towns and cities and I know that I've had many things about each place that I've loved and hated. I see some on here talking about Osoyoos and where you have questioned it. I used to live in another small city near there called Penticton. Beautiful place that I grew up near and where I lived when I first got married. It's nestled between two lakes so it's expensive like almost any Okanagan town/city is. Anywhere in the Okanagan Valley is hot. If you don't like heat, you won't want to go there.

Umm, someone just PMed me & I for the life of me, can't find the "reply" button.

I even added them as a friend & still nothing, it only has a "delete" button.

I've never seen a VBulletin configured this way, very strange.

Michelle
If you look at your PM again you should see on the bottom of the page (bottom right) where it says reply to this pm. You just click on those words.

And only 83 miles from Grand Forks.

Yep, it can get warm there but when it's 40C in Osoyoos it's generally 39C in Grand Forks.
