When are the labour strikes coming?

As the minimum wage rises, so will costs. People who used to earn more than the minimum wage will now be earning closer to the new minimum wage along with the inflation. Higher nominal wages will mean more people in higher tax brackets.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that labour unions won't be happy with their old contracts anymore. When are the labour strikes coming?

I wonder if we'll see any strike action at all. While the percentage of Canadian workers represented by a union has remained relatively flat in recent decades that is because membership in public sector unions has grown considerably. In contrast, private sector union representation is down by roughly half over the past twenty or thirty years. Competition from competing unions as well as a shift towards non-union labour has put many private sector union members in a place where they are happy to be working at all. As well, No-Strike-No-Lockout clauses are becoming more common in collective bargaining agreements, leaving unions open to considerable financial penalties should they decide to strike.

During my working career I had quite a few experiences with unionism.

I had a few issues ....

I never liked the fact that union halls were not owned by the members themselves. When Mine Mill Union was ousted by the Steelworkers union in Sudbury in the 1960's, the local union membership did not inherit the Mine Mill union halls, and the same workforce but with different union representation (Steelworkers) had to finance and build new union halls.

I never liked the idea that 5 cents of every dollar in dues went to the NDP political party. Although I always voted NDP, I always felt bad for those members who were voting for other parties but were actually financing another political party.

I never liked the idea that paid production bonuses were subject to union dues. I think that union dues should only be paid on the salary being earned.

I really liked the role that unions played towards ensuring a safe workplace.

As a local union president, I always noticed that members constantly complained about the union but never showed up at regular scheduled union meetings. The only time union members took an interest in what was happening at the union hall was during contract negotiations.

The largest mistake that unions made was to not have purchased a major newspaper chain. They did invest in community events such as summer camps and stuff, but they needed a loud voice within the community as well, but failed miserably.

You will labour, make no mistake

only work will set you free
Hi! Dark Beaver.....

The problem is that the Liberals and Conservatives have learned that in order to win elections, you need to make the voters feel confident and happy.

The NDP talks about the problems people face and it depresses the voter and the voter votes for those political parties which make them feel good.

Unions disappeared because the voters always vote against their own interests.

You an old VALE boy eh?

Your Steelworkers union is gutless and you won't save the Flux benefits for 6500.

Unionism is now dead and gone because of Free Trade agreements. You can not have unionism and Free Trade.

The company I work for deducts from the employees pay for the long term disability. Right now it's $250 A month off of my cheque. Would be nice if the union I'm with can get the company to shoulder it come the contract negotiation this year.

Hi ! Hoid

I'm thinking that you are asking me the question "Why"? ....

Perhaps I should of said that manufacturing unions are all dead and gone and not unionism itself. Unions will still be viable in food service and accommodation services. But, they will not be powerful unions, powerful enough to withstand a lengthy strike while paying out strike pay because of such low dues being collected from members.

Free Trade in manufactured goods is not Fair Trade because it does not outlaw currency manipulation or devaluation.

It Is impossible for the North American worker to compete on the world stage when any country can devalue their currency in order to compete.

If you were interested, I could write you a thesis on Free Trade and my view/experiences.
