Well, I'm not allowed to say about my kids...What about when I graduated from University...or is that taboo for this thread too?

The first time I really waterskiied instead of waterflopped! That was this summer, and quite a feat!

RE: What was the best day

I'd have to say the day I quit a major film/camera company. I walked around with a smile for weeks. Man, I hated that job.

I don't remember the best day of my life. I was about four days old, and my adopted mother found me abandoned in a shopping cart at the supermarket. She took me into her life forever.

Yeah, I had one of those once too, and the day I left it was certainly among the better days in my life. The boss was an unpredictable alcoholic, fascist bastard one minute, the soul of reason and kindness the next. Seemed to depend on how long it'd been since his last nip from the bottle in his desk. I'm not in the habit of wishing ill upon people, but boy, if ever there was a guy who deserved to choke on a chicken bone and die... I hated him, hated the job, hated the company, and the more I learned about it, the more I hated its main business, which was uranium mining. I ended up there because of a corporate merger, and couldn't afford to quit on principle and just walk away, I had young children, a big mortgage... I stayed only long enough to find another job, and I don't think I've ever been so glad to leave a place in my life.

But they gave me a nice farewell party, at which I gave a speech that had 'em rolling in the aisles. That was a sweet moment.

Ooh, good one, the best one listed so far.

Which, when compared to standing in the middle of Tiananmen Square...

How about, having sex standing in the middle of Tiananmen Square?

My story is this:

Up until Wednesday, I worked a 3:30 to midnight shift doing incident and problem management for EDS Canada, on the Best Buy USA helpdesk...essentially, my job was to ensure that the technical support personell were doing their jobs...which was a job I did very well, balancing authoritarianism with common sense, and giving these poor bastards a break when they needed it...I did this exact job for 2 years, 9 days...

But then I was late one day, because I was out of town, and late getting in, and wasn't able to call, because I didn't have a cell...a likely excuse I'm sure, but the truth all the same...

My supervisor, who started out in the same position as me, at the same time as me, but who was willing to <snip> to get where he wanted to be, demanded to know why I was late...

A little history would be appropriate here, before I offer my response...

A few weeks ago, at about 10:00 pm, I got a call from one of my managers telling me that my lead, whom we will hereinafter refer to as Clay Kotelo, would not be on call as he should be, and that my manager would be on call...fine I said...drunk I thought...

Anyway...as it happened, about an hour later, the website www.bestbuy.com went down hard...now this is a holy feckin' hell deal, because the generate upwards of 25% of their revenue from that site...and I was due to be leaving in an hour...so I called my manager, who asked me to stay until the site was up, as the midnight staff were not trained to handle critical incidents...

Ok I said...how long could it possibly take, with about 40 people working on the problem...

At 6:30 am, which is when Clay Kotelo should have arrived to releave the midnight staff, the site was up with minimal functionality, and so the issue persisted through the day...Clay Kotelo was to have replaced the midnight staff at that time, but he was nowhere to be seen...and so I waited...

7:30 came around, and I was getting impatient...

8:30 arrived, and my manager showed up and asked why I was still there..."because no one else showed up", said I..."well, where's Clay"..."beats the *censored* out of me" I said...and left it at that...

I drated a synopsis of the .com insident, as I was off the next two days...and worked again on Friday...Clay called me on Saturday...to ask me if I could submit the incident report fo the do com issue...I said that the issue was resolved on his shift, and that it should be his responsibility to document the incident. His response was that I knew more of the incident than anybody else...synopsis nothwithstanding...and that I should do the incident report...in other words...he fucked up and forgot to do it...

Incident reports are to be done the day that the incident has been resolved.

So Clay, who'd been given this position of privelege sought to nibble away at me like a duck, over the next couple weeks...which I largely ignored...

Last Sunday, I was coming back from out of town, and I was running late, and I didn't have a cell...not a big deal, since I'd covered for each and every one of those guys time and again for leaving early, or arriving late, countless times...

...but on this one occasion, the guy I was to have replaced, called Clay, because I was 20 minutes late, and so when I got there, Clay demanded to know why I was late...

"*censored* you Clay" I said, "You've got no fuckin' cause to be demanding anything of me, with the bullshit you've pulled."

To which he replied that he doesn't follow a schedule...which of course if bullshit, otherwise the midnight guys would be working

He then told me that I was in violation of the dress code...on a *censored* SUNDAY!!!

The next day, I offered an apology, in the form of an eloquently worded email, to the person I was replacing, who hurried out of the building as fast as his girly legs would take him...

Little *censored* pansy...

Anyway...for the next 3 days Clay was the nicest guy on Earth...and so I knew the jig was up...

On Wednesday, I was told that my contract was terminated...

The guy who told me my contract was terminated was almost in tears..."I didn't want to have to do this" he said...

The woman who escorted me out of the building said that I"m not blacklisted from their organization.

I waiting on my ROE to see if I've been laid off or fired...

It's all good though...because I tend to make more money working for myself than I do for other people...so long as the work can hold out...

So, while this was a shock...I think it's been one of the happiest days of my life to date...as I'm expanding my business exponentially as I type... :thumbright:

Probably the first time I faced up to a bully and splashed his nose across his face. What a rush! And then going home to find his mommy was complaining to my parents that their big brute of a son had picked on little Randy[100 pounds and a foot taller than me!] :)

Me too. One day I was working at a job that I didn't mind, the next I was working in a place where Dr. Evil would have fit seamlessly into the management structure.

discounting children I would say it comes down to mere moments. A transcendent experience in 1968 with the assistance of orange doublebarrel when the Universe unfolded as it should, while looking out at the Ottawa River. And a second similar experience in 2000 from a temporal lobe seizure. Better than TM.

The day I drove out of the Plant, after my very last shift. It was prior to a 2-year Golden Handshake, and then officially retiring on an un-discounted Pension. I finished working at 49, retired at 51.....
