Johnny Cash Musical Heads to Broadway
Wednesday, September 28, 2005

NEW YORK — After ABBA, the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, John Lennon and the Four Seasons comes the music of country great Johnny Cash.

"Ring of Fire, The Johnny Cash Musical Show" will begin performances on Broadway in February at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. An opening date has not been set.

Such Cash standards as "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," "A Boy Named Sue" and "Daddy Sang Bass" will be showcased in the musical.

The production doesn't put Cash on stage but instead creates an impressionistic picture of the man, his music and the times in which he lived. Cash died Sept. 12, 2003, at age 71.

"Ring of Fire" was created by Richard Maltby Jr. and William Meade and features a cast that includes Jarrod Emick, Cass Morgan, Jeb Brown and Lari White. Maltby, the man behind the Fats Waller revue, "Ain't Misbehavin'," directs.

The show received favorable reviews in its world premiere engagement at Buffalo's Studio Arena where the run ends Oct. 9.

The Buffalo News called the show "a fabulous piece of entertainment, a show that gracefully, beguilingly, transcends it own limits at every turn," while Variety, despite some reservations, described "Ring of Fire" as "hot. It just needs some careful tending to really burst into flame."

So-called "jukebox musicals" have not had much success on Broadway since the arrival of the megahit "Mamma Mia!" in 2001. Among the shows closing at a loss have been "Good Vibrations," "All Shook Up" and "Lennon." "Jersey Boys," celebrating Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, could buck the trend. It opens Nov. 6.

No one knows which party he supported. The Republicans held a tribute for him at their last convention in New York, which is more than I could say for the Democrats.

Nonetheless, his songs were great.

Have you ever listened to his song about why he wore black, Nascar Nero? Have you examined the politics of the outlaw movement?

Back in the 60's, I agree that some of his views were er ... different. For instance, he was against the Vietnam war. However, he never said he was a Democrat. The Democrats never held any event for him and the Repblicans did. It's anyone's guess which party he was affiliated with. He didn't make any donations to either, so it's hard to figure out. Good chance he was an independant.

Anyways, now's not the time to go into the politics of such a great performer.

Pigasus and the guys who put him up for office weren't Democrats either, Nascar Nero. I never said that Cash was a Democrat though, I said he leaned to the left.

As for whether the GOP held a thing for him or not...that's neither here nor there. Al Franken went to dinner at the Bush White House too. Do you think Al Franken suddenly decided to become a Republican?

Are politics really that alien to you?

...reverend blair does it really matter if he leaned left or right? why are you bringing up such nonsence?

yea he did sing in San Quintin and I beleive he played the Man in Black in protest to Nixon ( correct me if I got the wrong persident) but it don't matter. Plus who knows maybe he might of been right on some issues, such as guns, Jesus, ol dixie......ect

Johnny Cash music is actually timeless it doesn't matter your generation. One of teh country greats.......... along with Hank jr/sr and good ol Merle.

Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard are among the greatest singer/songwriters ever :) Their personal lives and their politics mean nothing to me.

Any Johnny Cash fan, or anyone really, who gets a chance to 1999's All Star Tribute to Johnny Cash should jump at the opportunity. MuchMoreMusic played it repeatedly right after the stars death and I couldn't get enough of it. Highlights are Wyclif Jean's rendition of Dalia's Gone (from Cash's fabulous American Recordings discs) and Dave Matthews and EmmyLou Harris's cover of She Walks These Hills (In a Long Black Veil). Whatever your musical tastes you'll be amazed.
