Wish I'd been able to see it first hand.

A waterspout was spotted in open water just off the coast of the Vancouver Westside earlier this morning.

According to Environment Canada, the unusual weather occurrence, paired with a brief period of torrential rain, happened at approximately 10 a.m.

The federal agency has issued a marine-based waterspout watch warning for the South Coast due to a potent low pressure system. The notice says waterspouts are possible today over the Strait of Georgia, Howe Sound and Haro Strait. The marine-based warning is in effect until 5 p.m. today.

For the Metro Vancouver region, there is a risk of thunderstorm and showers later in the day.

When tornadoes are over water, they are called a waterspout. Tornadoes occur during atmospheric instability, forming as a rotating column of air that extends between a cloud, usually a cumulonimbus.

A spokesperson with Vancouver International Airport confirmed there is currently no cause for concern and that there was no impact to local air traffic.

I saw a waterspout once. It occurred when we had a cottage at Rondeau Park many, many years ago. It was a sunny day, and it didn't even look like it was going to storm. Suddenly, the wind picked up dramatically! We saw this waterspout coming in from the lake (it wasn't a very big one, thank goodness).

It came ashore about 4 cottages down, where there was a public access spot to the beach (cars could be parked there). It went across the beach, and up to a porta-potty that was there. It picked it up, turned it upside down, and shook it a few times. Then it dropped it down and went back up the beach to the water!

After it had come a safe distance back across the lake, I ran over to the spot. The porta-potty was laying on its side, and there was a trough marked in the sand. It had left using the exact same path as it had coming in!

It's weird. It's almost like it's entire reason for existence was to come ashore, pick up the porta-potty, shake it, and leave. Thankfully no one was in it at the time. That would have made for a crappy situation for sure!;)
