‘Walking Dead’ stuntman fell head-first on concrete: report

SENOIA, Ga. — A stuntman fatally injured during production of “The Walking Dead” fell head-first onto concrete about 22 feet (7 metres) below after appearing to try to grab a railing to stop his fall, an assistant director told authorities.
Coweta County coroner Richard Hawk has said John Bernecker, 33, was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. July 12. Bernecker died from injuries suffered in a fall some five hours earlier on the hit show’s set in Senoia, about 35 miles (56 kilometres) south of Atlanta, Hawk said.
Assistant director Matthew Goodwin told a responding officer that Bernecker was supposed to fall from a balcony over a railing onto “a pad made of a layer of 22-inch boxes, port-a-pit pads, and a large pad,” according to a report from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.
Austin Amelio, the only actor on the balcony with Bernecker at the time of the fall, told the officer he asked Bernecker if he’d ever done a fall like that before. The stuntman said he’d done a few but never from that high up, and he “seemed a little nervous,” Amelio told the officer.
Filming began after Bernecker gave a thumbs-up to signal he was ready, Goodwin said. Bernecker got most of the way over the railing and then appeared to try to stop the fall by grabbing the railing with both hands, but he hit the balcony, causing him to release his grip and spin upside down as he fell, the report says.
Bernecker landed a few inches from the pad, Goodwin told the officer. An on-set medic immediately responded and requested that 911 be called. Bernecker was flown by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital.
AMC, the network that airs “The Walking Dead,” said in a statement Friday that Bernecker’s family had decided to donate his organs.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and our hearts and prayers are with John’s family, friends and colleagues during this extremely difficult time,” the network statement said.

Last year, it was the augmented-reality challenge of Pokémon Go that brought new life to geo-gaming.
This year, AMC is hoping that terrain-based gamers will muster the same excitement for the dead.
The network and Next Games dropped a trailer Tuesday for "The Walking Dead: Our World," the latest AR offering that will overlay a fictional interactive game onto the player's real-world location through the roaming ease of a mobile screen.
In other words, in this virtual zombie apocalypse, you can fight the walkers wherever you're walking in the world of Rick, Negan and the Saviors.
"Our World," said to be coming soon to iOS and Android devices, is timed to the Oct. 22 Season 8 premiere of "The Walking Dead," the comics adaptation that is aiming to return to its ratings of yore.
Although Season 7 debuted to 17 million viewers last year, the series plummeted to 11.3 million by April's finale.
A week ago, Star Wars unveiled its massive AR game tied to December's arrival of "The Last Jedi," as augmented-reality entertainment from huge screen franchises becomes the new normal.

'Does anyone need saving'; Walking dead gather for New Jersey zombie walk

ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Hundreds of undead people have gathered at the New Jersey shore to take part in an annual zombie walk.
The event was staged Saturday in Asbury Park and featured a variety of mutated characters, including four undead Disney princesses and gory nurses. A zombie Donald Trump pushed a tombstone with his name on it and threw paper towels into the crowd while asking, “Does anyone need saving?”
Walk organizers tout the event as one of the biggest gatherings of the undead on the planet. Most participants apply their own ghoulish makeup before arriving, but others get their look done on scene from professional makeup artists.
Security was beefed up for the event following the mass shooting in Las Vegas, and organizers banned the use of prop weapons.
