Actor Andrew Lincoln is reportedly walking away from his lead role on The Walking Dead.
The British star has portrayed police officer-turned-zombie slayer Rick Grimes since the TV show premiered in 2010, but according to Collider, he has opted not to renew his contract for the upcoming ninth season.
Lincoln is expected to appear in just six new episodes, less than half of the 16 installments booked.
The 44-year-old abandoned his movie career after joining The Walking Dead, a small screen adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s hit comic book series, and he is reportedly turning his focus to films after he wraps up the remaining episodes on the zombie show.
Norman Reedus, who plays popular bow-and-arrow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon in the series, is rumoured to be in the running to replace Lincoln as the show’s leading man, with Us Weekly reporting he has negotiated a US$20 million contract to front the cast.
News of the casting shuffle on the programme is the latest in a string of surprise shake-ups.
Fan favourite Chandler Riggs, who portrays Rick’s son Carl Grimes, made a surprise exit from line-up in season eight and Black Panther star Danai Gurira has yet to confirm whether she’ll return as Michonne.
Lauren Cohan became engaged in a contract dispute with bosses at AMC network over her role as Maggie Greene earlier this year, before settling on terms in April that dramatically reduced her character’s screen time on the show.
She went from showing up as a series regular to starring in just six episodes of the next season, the same amount Andrew has reportedly signed up for. The actress has also signed on to new work, taking up a role in ABC network’s spy series Whiskey Cavalier.
Show officials say they have “no comment” on characters’ impending departures.
The ninth season of The Walking Dead premieres in the U.S. this autumn.

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed Andrew Lincoln will be leaving the hit zombie show.
The British actor has portrayed lead character Rick Grimes for eight seasons, ever since the cult TV series debuted in 2010, and comic book writer Kirkman, who is behind the source material for the programme, has now verified rumours he’s walking away.
“It’s looking that way,” Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter in response to whether the upcoming ninth season of The Walking Dead will be Andrew’s last. “It does make the differences between the comic and the show more pronounced, but at the end of the day, it’s all about Andrew Lincoln. This is a human being.
“This is someone I have known for almost a decade, somebody that I love. He’s been sweating (on set) in Georgia, away from his family, for so long.”
The comic book creator’s comments are the first from an executive behind the show confirming the departure rumours, and Kirkman insists fans will be delighted with the way Rick’s character leaves, despite disappointment over his exit.
“He cares about the fans,” Kirkman said of Lincoln. “He cares about the show deeply. He wants to do something special on the way out. We have something amazing planned.
“I wouldn’t want to spoil anything, but anybody who has been a fan of his journey, who loves Rick Grimes, who loves the world of The Walking Dead, you’re going to want to see what we do.”
Lincoln and his The Walking Dead castmates will appear at the annual Comic-Con International festival in San Diego, California on Friday, where fans can bid goodbye to the star in person, although there is no word on whether cast and crew plan to address his impending departure at the event.
Lincoln’s co-star Norman Reedus, who plays bow-slinging Darrell Pritchett, will reportedly take over as the show’s leading man amid rumours suggesting he is negotiating a new US$20 million contract with TV bosses.

Andrew Lincoln to star in 3 'Walking Dead' movies

Andrew Lincoln has signed on to star as Rick Grimes in three The Walking Dead movies for the AMC network.
The British actor starred in his very last episode of the post-apocalyptic horror series on Sunday night, and now he will continue his character’s story in a trilogy of feature-length projects written by The Walking Dead’s chief content officer Scott Gimple.
“We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met,” said Gimple in a statement. “These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features.”
The first film is expected to begin production as early as 2019, but unlike the series, the films will not be direct adaptations from The Walking Dead comics, written by Robert Kirkman, that the show is based on. As well as seeing Lincoln reprise his role as Rick, the features will also star Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis/Anne, who played a pivotal role in Rick’s final moments on episode five of season nine of the show.

In an interview with The New York Times published online after the episode aired, Lincoln insisted he was “categorically” not returning to the television series. But discussing the film series, he shared he was interested to find out what had occurred away from the strand of the story depicted on the show.
“I thought the idea of a character that the audience knows and has lived with — and who has oscillated between psycho and father for nine years — to start in a completely different place, was a really interesting, crazy place to begin,” he explained. “I want to know why we keep seeing helicopters flying around. What’s going on? What have the grown-ups been doing while we’ve been scrambling around in the dirt?”

I stopped at the 23,534th way to kill a zombi. I got to admit the cable on the highway was pretty good, they should have made that the 'standard'. Mexico would be a done deal, one swoosh.
