The Net is one of my primary sources of news and entertainment. Is it good or bad? Both, but still better than picking up a newspaper or watching TV.When the Net was younger, things were more freewheeling than today& I miss that.

I agree with missile. I never used to pay attention to the news but with the internet it has become part of my schedule to keep up to date with things happening not just in my area but around the world.

Another good thing about the internet is that it has in a way made the world more of a global village. You can now chat with people from all around the world and get to know different cultures, etc. This is one of the aspects I like most about the internet.

I think it is the future of media. It is a lot easier to sit at your computer and do work/other activities while watching your favourite TV show. I have a feeling you will see online video rentals and online TV networks very soon.

Another thing with the future is something like BitTorrent. Although it can be used for piracy is does have its good side. Linux users can more easily get their favourite distro's. Demo's can be more easily spread around for game developers. If you're a site with low bandwith using something like BitTorrent is a godsend because it uses very little bandwith on your part and it gets spread very well.

Is the internet good or bad? I listed some good things about it above. There is bad things though. Computer users are getting lazier and lazier to a point where they are on the computer every second of their spare time. It does not promote movement and your health will drastically decline if you do not do some type of movement/excersise during the day.

Another bad thing is piracy. It's become rapid very quickly and also makes illegal stuff like child pornography very accessable. It's probably the sadest state for the internet but some piracty programs, like BitTorrent can have it's good side.

This is just my view on things, I hope no one takes offense on anything said :).

Looks like you're looking for help with an assignment, but no matter, it's an interesting question.

I think the Internet, like most technologies, is neither good nor bad, it's ethically neutral. It's what people do with it that makes it good or bad. It's like an airplane. You can use a plane to transport people and goods quickly, which I'm sure most of us would agree is a good thing. You can also use it to drop bombs on people, which I think is a bad thing.

Communities like this one, and the Straight Dope Message Board, and others like them, I think are unreservedly good things, as sources of good entertainment, information, and communication. I've never failed to find good information on any subject I've ever been curious about somewhere on the Internet. It also provides alternative sources you can't get anywhere else if you're looking for information about what's really going on in Iraq, for instance.

But you have to be careful too. Most of the information available is not reviewed by anyone for accuracy, completeness, or good sense, so it places a much greater burden on the user to make intelligent judgements. There's a vast quantity of crap out there. Anyone with a stupid opinion and access to a computer can become a "source" of information. So not only are there positive and entertaining communities like this one, there's at least an equal number of cranky little special interest groups pushing their foolish agendas. Creation science comes to mind as one of the more harmless ones. The Internet's a fine example of Sturgeon's Law: 80% of everything is crap. (Theodore Sturgeon, science fiction writer, definitely worth reading.)
