But they don't have snow and winter... that is what I call great weather:)

Whoaaaa Nelly! Backup the wagon! We have snow and winter.. Vancouver doesnt expeirence it as much as they are RIGHT on the cost. But the REST of BC and Alberta surrrreee do.. :) You want somewhere great to go skiing in the winter? Able to stand low temps.. ahhh perfect..

Where I am its usually 35C-44C during the summer and during winter anywhere from 5C to -30C. hehe Although the last few winters have only been about -22C (they call it global warming, I call it someone above giving us a little break) hehe

HAHAHAHA.. The west isnt rich.. They are rich in resources. That's the only economy they have really. Goto Vancouver and see that our weather in Montréal is much nicer ;-))

I dont follow that too well. Yes the west is rich, Alberta and BC are leading this country in wealth creation, job creation and are outside of toronto the fastest growing regions in Canada. That is wealth without a doubt. Beyond that both Vancouver and Calgary have thriving high tech industries. Vancouver and BC in general is not known as Hollywood North for no reason. Walk or drive down any Vancouver street or that in the suburbs for that matter and your sure to run into a film set. Tourism is a huge draw for BC and Alberta as well. Finally lets not forget BCs billlion dollar pot industry!!

The thing is Ottawa steals it and gives it to Ontario on east to buy votes. Alberta gave some 3 billion last year alone! BC is sitting on some of the worlds largest diamond mines and natural gas deposits. The future here is good if you agree with mineral and oil exploration and exploitation.

Montreal having better winter than Vancouver? That s a laugh and a half! I have lived in St. Jean right outside of Montreal, the winters are long, cold and snowy. In Vancouver some years we are lucky to even get to the freezing mark even once a winter season. The average winter temp is around 10 degrees.

Come summer the heat and humidity and smog makes going outside in central Canada a real chore. Here in Vancouver the weather is stable between april and oct with temps ranging 10 - 30 degrees at all times. With a constant breeze from the Pacific the air rarely sits and festers into air quality warnings like TO and Montreal. Sure it may rain alot from nov to april but everything is green all summer, the air is clean and the tourists from down south love it.

Can you surf in Vancouver? Hell yes. Vancouver is one of the few cities where during the summer you can ski in the morning, and get sun and surf in the afternoon, and go fishing for salmon at night. From right downtown Vancouver there are three great ski hills within half an hour drive. Whistler is only two hours away. Surfing or wind surfing is both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. Some of the best surfing in Canada is around Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Do yourself a favour come and visit the nicest city in Canada. I dont say that just because I live here now, I have lived in Calgary, Red Deer, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal. None can hold close to Vancouver point over point. People will not jump on you for your lack of english. Vancouver is built around the tourist industry and as such is very open to other cultures and languages. It is a source of pride for most on the coast.

Outside of Vancouver in the interior region cities of the Okanogan the summers are the hottest in Canada as it is a near desert region. The winters there are much like the rest of Canada though. But add the mountains and there is winter pleasure a plenty to be had.

After further reflection on this post, I decree every Canadian should have to live at least one year in every province as to better understand eachother. It is clear that with the sheer size of Canada many misnomers are formed around what people just dont know or have yet to experiance. This would go a long way to clearing up the West vs East debacle which now hovers over Canada.

Just popped in for a look and thought to add my two cents. Despite the fact that you cannot see much difference between Cdns and Yanks, there is a difference and its how we view the world and our places in it. What we expect from our gove't and our people. I'm overseas at the moment and let me tell you the number of people who tell me that Canada is far better than the US after having been to both is staggering. The only trouble with Cdn's (identity wise) is that we don't trust our own ability to create ourselves (culture, gov't, etc). We always look to the US with amix of envy and dislike. Lets just give it up and get on with the business of Canada. We'll never be as big or as powerful, so lets quit trying to emulate what worked for them and create what works for us.

Cheers
Jack

I agree, we lack the ability to create our own truly unique identity... But it's like that with most minor countries in the world.... Well, we arent exactly minor, but you know what I mean.

One day, you'll see, the United States will be kicked off it's pedestil like it was on September 11, 2001.

Especially if they go after North Korea. Unlike Iraq, Panama,Grenada and wherever else the US has invaded (since vietnam) North Korea will and has the means to fight back.

The US only goes after countries they know they can beat. You don't see America going after China to free Tibet or Taiwan do you?

No oil is probabley the real reason.

I think Canada is very different then the USA!

If it wasn't so then American's wouldn't be sticking little maple leave pins to their backpacks while traveling abroad!

If it wasn't so then we Canadians would be demanding thank you's left right and centre for the contributions, and aid we've given.

Also, can you spell colour, neighbour, honour, etc

I am a proud Canadian born and raised, our country has much to offer the world, and has done just that for decades. To say we are Americans is very vague, we speak the same language, eat the same food, enjoy the same toys, but aside from these types of things that other countries also partake, we more importantly have different values, our own values. We are an accomplished nation, few people talk about our accomplishments, perhaps because most do not know of them, but hopefully not because they don't care. Canadian technology and people played a major part in America's success in space, remember Avro ? Of course I did not like traitorous actions of the then Prime Minister Defenbaker. Living past that, ever notice how many great actors and actresses are Canadian. Medical break throughs ? Canada has tremendous technical abilities, how about our natural resources? Nothing to do one night ? search the web on these issues and you would be surpised.

I heard today a commentator from the United States say that they really do not need Canada, I guess he doesn't realize how much the U.S. really depends on Canada, granted we rely on the U.S. as well. We are it's largest oil supplier, without our hydro California would most likely be dark. I am not saying that I dislike Americans or that Canada is perfect. The fact is that we are very close neighbours, we have differences and should be proud of this, it makes us what we are. There is alot of crap slinging going on lately by overly mouthy people from both countries, some think that we are not friends with the U.S. and vice versa, some loath the Americans and vice versa. I had my tires slashed by in the U.S. by someone that was upset Canada didn't attack Iraq. ( the idiot left the reason on a note ). That aside, it is nice to know that we stood by our values despite U.S. pressure. You acn buy tires, but you can't buy pride or integrity.

Canadians are generally well accepted through out most of the world we travel as we are. Remember when American traveller's were putting Canadian flags or Maple Leafs on their luggage, why was that ? Simple, we are better liked, we don't go around imposing our values forcibly. Do not confuse peace keeping with this, we try to keep the peace for innocent people, not walk in and over throw their governments. Democracy is nice, but lets not destroy people's lives in the process. I am not a tree hugger, anti war advocate or protester, I just think that how would we feel if some country forcibly came here and felt we should adopt their way of life. Should a country or a group threaten our values and way of life, I will defend Canada. I would not go doing pre-emptive strikes " just in case ".

As for the province of Quebec, not all resisdents, just the hardcore separatists......??? Where will you go ? France will have nothing to do with you, the U.S. does not want you ( they have seen the trouble you make ). But I suppose that that is not an issue, since you do not want to be Canadian, you most likely wouldn't want to be American, or anything else anyway. Good luck with your new republic, considering that the Native people let you keep the land that is. What currency will you use ? Canadian Dollars ? American Dollars ? How much do you think a Quebec Dollar will buy ? You should pick a country, it is tough to make one nowadays. You really should feel lucky that Canada has enough compassion to keep you as part of this country. I am sure your reply may be " you just don't understand us " you are totally correct, I do not. There has been no more suffering in Quebec than the rest of Canada, you have not earned anything more in my eyes. If anyone, the native people of this land should come before you, they did come first and have given this country more support.

Canadians, be proud, we have earned it. Teach our children.

But as for letting too many immigrants in, not much could be done about it. After all, muskets are were far superior to bows and arrows.

While the Tiwanese might want to preserve certain human rights which don't yet exist on the mainland, the vast majority still consider themselves Chinese. Most of the hipe over 'separation' revolves around preotecting their human rights more than aboout any notion of sovereignty. If the mainland suddenly recognized equal human rights today, Taiwan would want to rejoin without a second thought.

Every country has immigrants, some more than others depending on their foreign policies, it is how most nations have come to be and have grown ( kind of basic history ). It is the people that shape a nation and it's culture. Culture can be ever changing as with the times, the first settlers made a culture, but this culture has adapted over time. As technology advanced so changed culture, like it or not. If culture didn't change neither would we, or course strong values of culture still remain as they get passed on, but we all evolve. With new immigrants bring new cultures, ever like to eat foreign food ? Where do you think it came from ? We didn't just trip over it, someone brought it to us. If you feel " watered down" by other cultures coming to Canada, remember you are still you and you should have your pride as a Canadian, new immigrants don't change who you are. Granted, with the influx of culture it can seem overwhelming at times, but you are who you are, do not lose that and you won't feel synthetic.
