Vancouver police say they have seized a large cache of weapons, including a semi-automatic SKS rifle, from a tent in Oppenheimer Park.

Police were called to the Downtown Eastside homeless camp on Tuesday evening after receiving a report about a domestic dispute in progress in the park.

The VPD says officers discovered weapons lying in plain view inside a tent that police believe is a communal space in the tent city.

“This is a unique seizure because of the size of the stash of weapons in this one location,” said VPD spokesman Sgt. Aaron Roed.

Among the weapons seized were a SKS rifle, a silver revolver, two 6mm orange handguns, two airsoft guns and a suspected replica Uzi.

Police also removed more than 30 knives, two machetes, two axes, a hunting bow, smoke bombs, smoke grenades, handcuffs, ammunition, a dozen propane tanks, multiple bicycles and a small quantity of drugs, including powders, pills and liquids.

Roed said the guns are being analyzed to confirm if they are real or replicas.

The remaining weapons and drugs are in police custody and will be destroyed.

“We are working with the community to keep the neighborhood safe,” said Roed. “Taking these weapons off the streets is another step in the right direction. Officers will continue providing a presence, keeping the peace, and ensuring public safety for the park and surrounding neighbourhood.”

No arrests were made as police say a single occupant of the tent has not been identified.

It is little wonder that businesses and residents in the area have been constantly petitioning the lackadaisical Van Parks Board to rid the park of the vermin, filth, and other life forms illegally squatting in what was once but may never be again a beautiful park - now they find out that someone puke has been caching weapons.
