Sometimes it takes an average citizen to point out where a company has gone wrong.

Vancouver Island man's rant against BC Ferries goes viral

Vancouver Island resident Sean Smith’s rant against BC Ferries’ cruise ship-like operations has gone viral on Facebook.

Smith, who is a Canadian war veteran, published his rant just two days ago. At the time of publishing, the post has received nearly 4,000 likes and 3,300 shares.

The post targets the ferry corporation’s vessel amenities and marketing strategies, even though it is an essential service between the Island and the mainland.

This comes after the quick demise of last week’s revealed plan that both the ferry corporation and provincial government were considering to axe the major route that runs between West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo’s Departure Bay.

With fares rising beyond inflation and cuts in service, the ferry corporation has been a subject of much-heated controversy in recent years. A recent report revealed that fare hikes beyond inflation have crippled ridership growth and cost the provincial economy $2.3-billion in GDP over the last decade.

Here is the full text of Sean Smith’s rant on Facebook:

Dear BC Ferries.

I know that you are having a hard time trying to figure out ways to save money. Please, let me help you.

1. You are not a cruise ship line. You are a bus.

2. You are not a travel agency. You are the travel method.

3. You do not need to advertise. You are the ONLY alternative.

So, with these three things in mind, please consider the following. You need a news stand, not a gift shop. You need a cafeteria, not a restaurant. You don’t need slot machines, you need good WiFi and some big screen TV’s. You don’t need a “marketing department”, you need a full on Social Media and Customers Service department. You don’t need a fancy travel office or vacation planning department, you need plan to keep the actual travel agents informed of what is happening with your ferry service.

I shouldn’t see the BC Ferries logo on the boards at Rogers Arena during a Canucks game, or on a TV commercial. Believe it or not, people really are smart enough to figure out that if there isn’t a bridge or a tunnel to the Islands, then they will have to take a ferry or a plane…..and you can’t get your car into your carry on luggage.

See. I just saved you millions upon millions of dollars.

You’re welcome.

He's 100% right. The only reason I try not to take the ferries is the cost. No amount of advertising will convert me to more use.

Ten years ago I would go to Vancouver 2 or 3 times a year. Now it's maybe once every couple of years. Strictly from necessity.

If I want to visit my family on the island it either takes me all day (transit and ferry) or it costs $140 to take my car. Taking the car is a nice option cause I don't have to pay someone to look after my dogs and I can get around on the island. Don't have to rely on friends and family to drive me everywhere.

The ferry corp has lost sight of their purpose. They can't run it like a for profit business.

Rent a car when you get there. It's far cheaper than taking your own.

That might a good plan. If they could just manage to get a bus to go from a sky train station directly to the ferry terminal like they USE TO HAvE, then it's be eazy peazy.

Vancouver Island
we moved to the island in l980, and yes, use to travel to the mainland a couple of times a year, and when
my grandson was golfing competetively on the mainland, several times a year, but since he has moved on,
we have no reason to take the ferry anywhere, and this island is all we need, there is nothing on the
mainland we can't get here, don't even go to a canucks game any more, far too expensive, but i have a much
better view of the games on my 52" hd screen, and with nhl center ice, there is no reason 'ever' to go
to a game live.

when we do go to the mainland, after 24 hours, we want to go home, and get out of the crowds, both
driving and walking.

i certainly feel for all of those who have to use the ferry, it is a big problem now.

I looked for sh-ts and giggles. Pick up today (they will pick you up at the terminal) drop off Sunday by 10:30 is $74 all in, unlimited km.

wow, that's great! I'm set for the island side of the journey. Now if the mainland side didn't require 1 sky train and 2 bus rides...

Tswassen bus from the Canada line or take the 100 airport from 22nd?

but then she can't bring her dogs

Quickest way from my house to the ferry by transit takes 1hr 20 minutes via Translinks website. Which isn't too bad as long as there isn't any traffic delays. It only takes 20-25 mins if I drive thanks to the new South Fraser perimiter rd. Before it took 40 minutes.

takes approx 7 hr total travel time via transit (return) and approx $110. $220 if I factor in Dog boarding costs @ $50/day

Driving from home takes approx 4hrs.40 minutes and costs $140. Almost worth it.

Still would be better if the ferries just lowered their rates and more people would take the ferry including myself.
