Believe it or not...this is the transcript of an actual radio conversation between a US naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. The Radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on Oct. 10, 1995.

US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW OF FACE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES!!
CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

If they do it in exercises why don't they do it in real life?

(other then this "mistake" of course)

what if the ferry was full of terrorists?

The ferry wasn't full of terrorists. If was full of old people travelling to one of those hundreds of islands in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

There they were chugging along nicely minding their own business- travelling on the same route that they've been travelling on for many, many years - when some loudmouthed, trigger-happy yanks come along and threaten to blow them out of the water for no reason.

I don't know what history book you are reading, but the Canadians were instrumental iin the win on the western front. But you are correct in that the yankees were there just to claim the glory.

Yes, you are very right and correct Hotshot, if you read up the post a bit, you'll see the credit I gave to the Canadian soldiers, airmen and navy (as well as the rest of the commonwealth). Does make you wonder JUST how hard the Russians REALLY were, if Japan (who let's not forget sits right next to em) were too scared and lmost immediatly threw in the towel when they declared war against em.

I'll not take away the part America had to play, but indeed like to think they had more than they had.

Newfoundland!
to be fair it was an accidental warning, on a general frequency rather than the private excersise one, and the ferry wasnt even meant to hear it and they weren't going to blow the ferry out of the water at all. the americans have been known to be trigger happy in the past but i don't think this is an example

Incredibly insulting, and actually, incredibly wrong, let's not go throwing "you'd be this if it weren't for us" rubbish..

If it wasn't for the mighty british navy, you'd be speaking French.....and ACTUALLY, Britain knew there wasn't actually a REAL possibility of German invasion, they could never get through the British navy blockade, they hardly had a navy and they also lacked air superiority.

No, if anything, we'd probably be on the border with Soviet RUSSIA ACTUALLY....Russia already had the Germans on the run and it was only a matter of time.

Let's get one thing strait you ignoramus...RUSSIA Won the European war virtually single-handedly, and without all their decent Generals....America was just there to clim the glory.

I really thought I'd rope Blackleaf with that troll-bait I threw out there...

But OK..you have some points, now...back to the part about being "wee little fairies"...no dispute there?:D

Nice try, that's from a commercial that ran in Europe, but keep up the Anti American hyperbole, it hasn't become tiring or anything.

Be as gripey as you like....

Old blackleaf, while I agree with his national priorities, and some of his points, he does tend to, as my mother would say "go on like a grammaphone record"

Oh well, that the British are "wee little fairies" comes as no big surprise

And you'd be spewing that little rhyme in German if not for us.

The Royal Navy should threaten to attack a Staten Island ferry.

So what if a Royal Navy ship entered American waters and threatened to blow a Staten Island ferry out of the water whilst its full of passengers? Would you "big, tough" Americans just think nothing of it or would you all be up in arms and protest about it? I mean, what if the Staten Island ferry was full of terrorists, you wee little fairies?

Isn't the US Navy trained to attack enemy warships rather than Clyde ferries?

I mean, what is the US Navy supposed to do? Everytime one of its ships is in foreign waters it is supposed to attack EVERY innocent passenger vessel it sees just IN CASE in MIGHT, just MIGHT, have terrorists onboard?

And if that's the case, then surely it works for the Royal Navy, too. Maybe the Royal Navy is allowed to threaten to attack Staten Island or Biscayne Bay ferries. Could they not be a threat to the national security of Great Britain?

Please Blacktooth... Our Southernly masters? This is funny considering your PM is Bush's lap dog.

Blair isn't Bush's poodle. He just shares the same views as Bush. It was Blair who came up with the idea of ousting Saddam 11 months before Bush even came to power.

And if you still will think that Blair is Bush's poodle, then please don't blame it on the English. Intead, blame it on the Scots. After all, Blair is a Scotsman not an Englishman and the English did NOT vote for Blair and the Labout Party at the last eelction - the Scots did. The English are traditionally right-wing and the Scots are traditionally left-wing and the English have got the Government that the Scots voted for.

But Blair is not Bush's poodle - he just like to get rid of tyrannical regimes and replace them with democracies. It's just a pity that Canada's Prime Minister - whoever he/she is (no-one in Britain knows who it is) - wasn't most like Blair and a few other European leaders who also sent troops to Iraq when it comes to fighting tyranny.

Blair is Bush's poodle, I repeat. All your patriotic drivel won't change my mind. Tony Blair reminds of that little dog Paris Hilton carries around with her... similar to Bush being Tony's master.

Regarding no one in Britain knowing how are PM is? Frankly, I doubt most Canadians would give a ****. The world doesn't revolve around your dreary little island.

I think most people know who Stephen Harper is. I also think perhaps, you should calm it down on the "dreary little island" comments. After all, without that "dreary little island", there would be no Stephen Harper or Canada.

Tony Blair is indeed Scottish, as is his deputy. But people are ignorant, especially about things they know little about. That goes for most people's comments here. I believe this post to be an old joke of a cut and paste kind.

Canada and the UK both are highly dependent on the US, so I see this rguement about "the poodle" being academic.

Of course the Brits should be blamed for Bushinski's butt kisser. After all, they elected him...

Blair was drug into an illegal war by a warmonger. Pity you people can't see that.

No actually we would just prefer, less anti American propoganda and insults to our intellegence, in the form of fake crap. Made up by someone that should thank the Japanese for inviting the Americans to save the British Isles.

Yes there would, we would just call it Ka na ata, and we would still have all the beaver we could eat.
