US ignored warning on Iraqi oil smuggling
By Claudio Gatti
January 13 2005

For months, the US Congress has been investigating activities that violated the United Nations oil-for-food programme and helped Saddam Hussein build secret funds to acquire arms and buy influence.

President George W. Bush has linked future US funding of the international body to a clear account of what went on under the multi-billion dollar programme.

But a joint investigation by the Financial Times and Il Sole 24 Ore, the Italian business daily, shows that the single largest and boldest smuggling operation in the oil-for-food programme was conducted with the knowledge of the US government.

“Although the financial beneficiaries were Iraqis and Jordanians, the fact remains that the US government participated in a major conspiracy that violated sanctions and enriched Saddam's cronies,” a former UN official said. “That is exactly what many in the US are now accusing other countries of having done. I think it's pretty ironic.”

United States:

Samir Vincent received 10.5 million barrels. In 2000, Vincent, an Iraqi-born American citizen who has lived in the U.S. since 1958, organized a delegation of Iraqi religious leaders to visit the U.S. and meet with former president Jimmy Carter.

Shaker Al-Khafaji, the pro-Saddam chairman of the 17th conference of Iraqi expatriates, received 1 million barrels.

RE: US ignored warning on

The thing is that it doesn't matter. The attacks on Kofi Annan and the UN aren't showing up in the news, they are showing up in right-wing opinion columns. Opinion cloumns aren't fact-checked like the news.

The push for this brutal herd of lying scum attacking the UN comes right out of PNAC. It was pretty low key until Kofi said that invasion of Iraq was illegal...something he was kind of pushed into during an interview...then all hell broke loose.

The way these guys operate is they count on people not distinguishing between news and opinion. Most people don't know the difference and the media has been blurring the line more and more over the last four or five years.
