US bound plane diverted after pilot calls 'emergency'
16th August 2006

The United Airlines plane, which has been diverted to Boston while enroute to Washington.

An overseas flight from London's Heathrow Airport to Washington, D.C. has been diverted to Boston after the pilot declared an emergency because of a passenger disturbance, the airline said.

United Flight 923 with 182 passengers and 12 crew members landed safely at Boston's Logan International Airport, United spokesman Brandon Borrman said.

A Logan spokesman said three passengers had a confrontation with the flight crew.

Early reports say that one woman became hysterical during the flight after reportedly being found with 'matches, a screwdriver, Vaseline and a note on Al Qaeda'.

An official said the United flight had been escorted into Boston by fighter jets. State Police took control of the plane after it landed.

All the passengers have been taken off the plane and their carry-on luggage is being checked by police and sniffer dogs, said a spokesman.

The emergency comes as airline security is on red-alert following a foiled terrorist threat to blow up 20 UK planes last week.

However, on Monday, security was breached at Gatwick airport when a 12-year-old boy walked on to a plane unchecked with no documents.
