Kiev court says no to gay rights march

Saturday 25th May, 2013
A court in Kiev has banned Ukraine's first gay pride event.
The court ruled the march, would have attracted anti-gay activists into the centre of the city, where annual Kiev Day celebrations would also have been taking place.
A group of opponents led by the Orthodox Church led the objections to the march.
The Church, through its Archpriest Georgy Kovalenko, issued the grounds for complaint, saying the march was simply propaganda for "sin and sodomy."
Last year the gay pride rally was called off following violence against homosexuals who had turned up for the event.
The violence was led by right-wing skinhead groups.
Local gay rights members have said while the event could be held out of the main city area it was likely there would simply be a press conference on the rights of minorities and the banning of the march.

The Ukraine and other such countries continue to live in the dark ages what else does one expect?
It was not too long ago that the Ukraine was begging for support from the west in its bid to achieve
freedom and democracy, and no sooner than they get their freedom they then deny it to someone
else. Democracy is a fine thing as long as its convenient, I guess. I know people who are gay and
they never hurt anyone, This whole thing about sin and that crap is just that. Freedom means people
have a right to live their lives. We have St Patrick's Day parades, Santa Parades and Indo Canadian
days of celebration along with all kinds of other events. What is the difference with having one more
and everyone included. I noticed the day of National Celebration was going ahead and the church
had no problem with that. The position of the government is nonsense.

My good Ukrainian friend will be upset by this nonsense. He and his Canadian wife are strong advocate for equal rights for everybody, including gays. I think he may call off his trip to the homeland when he hears about this.
