I've come upon an interesting take on the situation. This one's for all of you conspiracy guys, however in this day and age anything could be expected.

Sounds like an astute take on the development. I agree completely, surprise, surprise  .

Apparently these volleys from Harper were released at a press conference in response to a question that wasn't asked. In any case, Karl Rove could come up with a scenario like that with half his brain tied behind his back. Bush himself wouldn't have to stretch too far to think of it, given his campaign experience, so I don't think it's all that unlikely.

Harper's previous anti-Canada rhetoric and his support for US-Canadian integration, makes this sudden desire for sovereignty suspect --one might even say, "anti-American", since we know that the US always has only the best of intentions, is our trusted friend and ally, yadda yadda...

I think leaders do this kind of thing for each other all the time.

This could be a serious blockbuster of a movie. It has all the elements. There would have to be merciless seal clubbing scene to justify the invasion and to rally the American population.

Foucault was once asked about the mechanisms through which the upper crust consolidated their power and if there was a high degree of collaboration between various like minded groups. He said something to the effect that while it would suit his biases to believe this he did not think they were intelligent enough to coordinate it.

While Canadians are busy warding off Americans, the EU and Japan will be building cafes right along the Northwest Passage.

Won't work. If you ever calculate the person per square mile for the whole passage you'll find yourself getting a customer for coffee once every three months.

Actually it's very hard for any private industry to run up there in resturants and such. Most usually last a year or so before shutting down. Places that do though have to charge an arm and a leg for things, at least take your average fast food price and add x3 to it.

Actually Jo, I wasn't being literal. I was implying the EU and Japan among others are under the same belief that the Northwest Passage are international waters.

Let's face it, you need to build up your military to safeguard what you deem to be your land/water. If Canada is going to wait until the last minute to do something about it other than whine, you're going to lose.

(PG) (Dir. King Vidor, 1940. 125m) Standard. Technicolor (with Spencer Tracy, Robert Young)
Evocative filming of Kenneth Robert's book about Rogers' Rangers and their stoic leader, enduring hardships and frustrations while opening up new territory in Colonial America. The river-fording sequence is a knockout.

Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald did the Northwest Passgae in 1938. 8O
