Tsunami sirens sound in Alaska after 7th largest earthquake in US history hits off coast

Tsunami sirens sounded in parts of Alaska late Wednesday after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit off the coast of the state at about 10:15 p.m. local time, creating small tsunami waves measuring under a foot above tide level in some communities.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property, though several Alaskan coastal communities did evacuate following the quake.

U.S. Geological Survey data says it was the seventh largest in U.S. history, tied with another Alaskan quake from 1938 and is the largest in North America since a magnitude 8.7 quake in 1965.

Hardly anyone lives in Alaska, anyway. It's freezing cold and boring.
