truck driver from Ontario planning to move to Alberta

:wave:Hey guys how y'all doing? I have a few questions and i hope some one will answer for me. I am planning to move to Alberta in about a month (august 2007 to be exact) and i was wondering how the trucking business is in Alberta? I work as a DZ truck driver in Ontario and i used to also drive a tow truck. Is it easy to get a job in Alberta as a truck driver? Which city should i go to? How much will i make?

Thanks Pangloss so calgary is the place to be. Do you know how much a`Dz (class3 i believe in Alberta) driver makes an hour? And how much is a one bedroom apartment?

Pangloss i checked the ads for truck driver on calgary herald and to my surprise the pay is almost the same as Ontario. I guess when people are talking about big pay in Alberta they only talking about the oil field jobs. I'm planning to make 70-80K a year so i guess Calgary is not the place for me after all. Well I'll go back to researching Fort McMurray and the northern part of Alberta.

If you're thinking of

relocating to Fort McMurray, remember the average housing cost is roughly $550,000-$600,000. Housing in most parts of AB has increased quite a bit recently. If you're not in the oil and gas industry, you may be better off staying away from AB.

I have to ask. If someone is planning on a job that is NOT oil and gas dependent, why would you move to the oil and gas areas where it's ridiculously expensive? There are so many small Alberta towns a truck driver could live in where housing is reasonable. You're driving anyway right?

My Uncle is moving to Yellow Knife. Tim Horton's employees make almost $18/hour, so perhaps this would be a good place for you, workingman?:smile:

Im Also From Brampton And Drive Truck, Looking To Move To Edmonton And Drive A Flat Bed Or 1 Of Those Oil Vacuum Truck, Im Also An Apprentice Mechanic, I Notice A Mechanic Gets Paid Much More Than A Truck Driver I Know Driving Truck Out There In The Oil Feild Would Pay Much Higer. There are plenty of jobs all over Edmonton for Truck drivers. From what I have seen on the advertisement boards in front of the businesses, the wages seem to range between 16 -20 dollars per hour depending on class of license. The big problem with moving to Edmonton or Calgary is the absolute lack of accommodations and the cost of living. My apartment used to be 700 dollars per month, in this building suites now range between 1250 for lower level to 1450 per month for upper level. This is for a 2 bedroom, no balcony, no covered parking (pkg is extra) and no dishwasher. Basically a very bare bones apartment. Vacancy rates are supposed to get worse and prices are supposed to continue to go up. The problem with living in Alberta is the cost of living is absolutely ridiculous and projected to get even worse as people continue to flock here. The wages however have not at all kept up with the skyrocketing cost of living. Eastern Canadians don't here too much about that part until they move here and realize that they have to live in a tent I'm not kidding, allot are doing that. Must be fun during our 6 months of winter.
