hey i am new to this site, so hi to everyone to start with :)
I am visiting Toronto at the end of July, and it is going to be my first major travelling experience, so I am a bit nervous about it and there are a lot of questions I keep thinking of, so I guess this will be the best place for me to find out some of the answers.
I am a student, so obviously budgeting is a big thing for me, is Toronto a good place money wise? I mean, will I get a lot for my bucks, or should I save a little bit extra just to be safe? Where are the best places to be to experience culture and arts etc. Are there places that are over-rated and worth a miss?
maybe a stupid question, but are visa-electron cards accepted over there?!
I am sure I will come up with loads more questions before I head out, so help me in whatever way you can!!
thanks for your time people :D

RE: tourist type question

Hello Suzanne,

I'm not sure what visa electron you mean, but my Abbey National visa debit (used to be visa electron) card worked fine over there, although if I were you I'd consider a nationwide debit card as they charge you nothing.

but Toronto's very good for the arts, sport and of course great views such as niagara and the CN Tower (which is a bit pricey if you ask me), but I'll let the canadians explain more

here is what i recall of my time in the Toronto area (years ago but perhaps still relevant):

CN tower: over rated, but i come from a mountainous region...
Casa Loma: interesting.
Lakeshore and the island (which they call islands): very pretty, some nice beaches.
science centre: really designed for children
young and bloor area: if your into shopping you will like to see this area along with the eaton centre
Royal Ontario Musium: good musium, especially if it has a good temporary exhibit
the zoo: very good zoo, plan to spend a full day there.
canada's wonderland: if you like rides it is the biggest themepark in canada as far as i am aware.

on money: you can spend a lot in TO, or if the weather is nice just walk the downtown and take in the views.

I don't remember.

Actaully, I haven't been to Toronto in some time. I was in Niagra Falls recently, but we only stopped in TO during the day, to shop.....you know where!

The last bars I was visited in Toronto was a small off-the-beaten-path tavern, the name I don't recall and the Hard Rock Cafe.

Hello Suzanne you should not go to Toronto at the end of July, it's horrible, you should come to Halifax it's beautiful that time of year and your money will go twice as far.

if ur after a cheapo place to sty and drink, I'd recommend the Global Backpackers (formally the "infamous" (why?) Spadina Hotle), thats cheap and righ at the centre of everything

I have never been there either, but it has a reputation that travels beyond the bar visiting crowd, and beyond TO. (I don't drink so I never go to bars)

Hey darkbeaver,

go to Halifax? Wouldn't cape breton island be a better choice out there? Personal opion, I find Halifax to be dumpy (but its in a large crowd as I find many places in canada dumpy).

I wouldnt worry about money issues if I were you.....with your pound, you get 3 times that in Canadian dollars just about! Unlike when I went to London.....changed $1000 and got less than 350 pounds for it!! Eeeeek

Dark Beaver Do you have a postal code. The cash I sent to your address has been returned to me, as it needs a postal code?
