Torontonians can expect to go to the polls on June 26 to choose a new mayor.

The cost of the massive byelection is estimated at $13 million, just shy of the $14.5 million spent on electing the entire municipal and school board governments in October 2022.

Would-be candidates should be able to register between April 2 at 8:30 a.m. and May 12 at 2 p.m.

Advance voting for the byelection, which will be held across the city, will be held between June 8-13.

The recommendations from City Clerk John D. Elvidge must still be approved by Toronto Council at its late March meeting.

“Although the City Clerk would not ordinarily fix or announce dates in advance of Council passing a bylaw, in this circumstance the City Clerk considers it to be in the best interests of the city, candidates and electors to announce the applicable byelection dates as early as possible,” a statement from the city clerk released Thursday states. “Making the dates public now also allows the City Clerk to start making preparations, including hiring election staff and booking voting locations.”

Former mayor John Tory resigned effective last Friday after revealing he had engaged in a relationship that began when the woman worked in his City Hall office.

Although many people urged him to stay — he was elected in a landslide just four months earlier — Tory said he wanted time to spend with his family.

Numerous individuals have already indicated they will run a mayoral campaign or are thinking about it, including several members of City Council and past candidates.

One person who has definitively ruled out a run is Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie who is handling the responsibilities of the mayor’s office until Tory’s successor is chosen.
