3 year old kid .... Kids pretty brilliant at that age if he can unlatch an apartment door.

So you've never seen a three year old haul over a kitchen chair to climb on the counter top to get at the cookies then? They are most definitely problem solving at that age.

Anyway some apartments just have an auto-lock on the door handle anyway, where you need a key from the outside but just to turn the knob from the inside.

Campaign for Elijah's funeral shatters goal
By Shawn Jeffords, Toronto Sun First posted: Friday, February 20, 2015 10:24 AM EST | Updated: Friday, February 20, 2015 12:13 PM EST
TORONTO - A campaign to raise money to cover funeral costs for three-year-old Elijah Marsh has eclipsed its goal in less than 24 hours.
The online campaign set up by Justin Kozuch aimed to raise $20,000. By 10:30 a.m. Friday morning it had raised over $64,000. Marsh died Thursday after wandering out of a relative’s North York apartment into the extreme cold wearing only a t-shirt, pull-up diapers and boots.
“The death of this child must be truly devastating to the family and friends of Elijah, the many members of the law enforcement and medical community in Toronto, as well as the countless Torontonians who helped search for him, spread the message of his disappearance and prayed for his safe return,” Kozuch wrote on the crowd-funding website Tilt.
"Help us raise some much-needed funds to help cover the cost of Elijah's funeral. Every dollar matters and any donation you make is greatly appreciated."
The company has also waived all credit card fees for those who contribute.

Elijah fundraising effort brings in $173G
By Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun First posted: Sunday, February 22, 2015 06:40 PM EST | Updated: Sunday, February 22, 2015 07:52 PM EST
When Justin Kozuch heard three-year-old Elijah Marsh had died in the snow after wandering out of his home last Thursday, he knew he had to do more than express his condolences in a tweet.
He ended up crowd-funding more than $173,000 to cover the costs of a funeral for Elijah.
The father of two — who works as a technology reporter in Toronto — recalled he immediately thought of his own three-year-old son, who can be “a little bit too adventurous” at times.
“It kind of dawned on me that it could have been my child,” Kozuch said Sunday. “I felt compelled to do more than just share my grief on Facebook or Twitter.”
So he created a Tilt campaign — ‘Help Cover the Costs of Elijah Marsh’s funeral’ — with the goal of raising $20,000. Word spread like wildfire and the effort raised more than $100,000 within 24 hours.
“I felt the right thing to do would be to help this family get through what must be a tragic time by helping ease the burden of the funeral,” Kozuch said.
The campaign finished Sunday afternoon, with more than 4,700 contributors and a final sum of $173,557.
“I was not expecting this at all,” Kozuch said.
Neither was Elijah’s mother, it seems. Georgette Marsh released a statement Sunday thanking Kozuch for “taking it upon himself to create this trust fund in memory of my baby boy.”
“(Kozuch’s) actions have led an entire country to band together in support of Elijah and that means more to my family and me than anyone can imagine,” Marsh wrote. “Thank you to every single person who has thought of Elijah during this time. Your love has shone a light on us and his memory lives on through all of you.”
Kozuch has contacted the grieving mother’s close friend to ensure the money gets to the family.
“We’ve met that goal of covering the funeral costs but there’s also a significant amount of money that’s left over,” Kozuch said.
He spoke with Elijah’s mother “briefly” on Saturday, adding “she’s quite devastated.”
It would be great to see a scholarship or grant created in Elijah’s name, he said.
“Ultimately it’s up to them to decide what is the best, most appropriate use of that money,” Kozuch stressed. “But if they do require help to figure that out, I’d be happy to connect them with community resources.”

Apart from the kindness and generosity of epic proportions demonstrating the big hearts of probably thousands of people, there is nothing that can diminish the tragedy of the loss of that little boy. Just hope the rest of the family can come out of this whole.
