I just read IRBS' comments and apparently management announced that Gibby will be back next year........I should copy IRBS and your comments to him............he might do better next year.

I agree about Eddy, RA and Thole and your remarks about Ryan and Darwin. I don't see Joey as a priority at all - he either takes what they offer or he and the team will part ways. I would like to see them re-sign Michael - at least give him another year. I don't know whether Kevin, Tulo, Darwin, Zeke and Smokie have contract talks coming up but if they do, I would like to see all of them remain with the team. I also hope Jason Grilli is back next year.

Just heard Marco say he'll be a Jay again next year - good news there.

I think of all the teams in both leagues that didn't make even this far and what it took for them to get as far as they did but still not quite there. I'm looking at these last two years as practice for the World Series so that by the time we do get there we are battle hardened and know exactly what it takes to get to the biggest show in baseball and come away a winner.

And, when all is said and done our Jays did finish 4th best and in doing so provided us with some moments we aren't likely to forget. Thank you Blue Jays for another great year of baseball.

Tulo is locked in (no-trade) until 2021 or something insane like that. Smoak and all 5 starters (outside of RA) are signed through at least next year. As is Martin and I think Navaro. Grilli has club option but is 39. Pilar is also under contract next year.

I got an alert on my phone about Gibbons but find now printed story or link on the interweb (including bluejays.com). Hopefully the alert was wrong. Came from CBS Sports.

Jays will probably offer Joey a 1 year deal which will allow him to have a better free agent year.

Cubbies are up 5 zip over LA in the middle of the 5th.

Yeah, so Jason is 39...........you don't think he has at least another year in him to be our 8th man?

Holy Smoke........................the Cubs are up 10........yeah 10 to 2 in the top of the 6th.........the Dodgers have committed 4 errors tonight and the last one cost them 2BIs.

I think he has another year but not as the 8th inning guy.

Would you just use him for partial innings then or for certain batters?

I'd use him as a "mid-inning closer". Jam in the 6th in tight game, bring him in to shut it down. Assuming he can repeat this years performance.

I also think the Jays should be targeting home field in ALCS. I believe if this series had started in Toronto, it would still be playing.

I'm good with that.

Could not agree more on home-field advantage.

I started watching the faces of players from other teams - especially those with low attendance - during introductions. The looks on some of those faces was priceless, IRBS. I don't think any of them had seen a stadium packed to the gills outside the post-season and even then maybe not. The energy in that stadium is immense and a power in itself that the Jays can harness.

.

yeah, drop them a note, they will be impressed I'm sure, lol.

and I will be surprised if he is back, not that I don't like him, but I just assume they are
wanting to turn in another direction now.

I'm sure he has much more going for him that his body language and general laid back appearance show.

sometimes he reminds me of 'elmer fudd'

Bautista, Encarnacion will get qualifying offers from Jays

GM Atkins says team will likely pick up option on reliever Jason Grilli

The Toronto Blue Jays expect to make qualifying offers to potential free agents Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, but have yet to decide whether to make the same offer to outfielder Michael Saunders.

In a season-ending news conference Monday, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the decision to extend qualifying offers to the sluggers is "about as easy a decision as we'll make."

The 33-year-old Encarnacion tied with David Ortiz for the AL lead with 127 RBIs while hitting 42 home runs and batting .263. The first baseman/designated hitter was an all-star this year for the third time.

The 36-year-old Bautista hit 22 homers with 69 RBIs while batting .234 in an injury-slowed season. The outfielder homered twice in the AL playoffs.

Bautista (265) and Encarnacion (239) rank second and third behind Carlos Delgado (336) on Toronto's career home run list.

"Those guys have had very good careers, have always hit right-handed and left-handed pitchers, and have been a huge part of this organization's success, especially in the last couple of years," Atkins said.

Bautista, Encarnacion, and Saunders are among nine potential free agents on Toronto's roster. The Blue Jays lost in five games to Cleveland in the ALCS, the second year in a row they have lost at that stage of the playoffs.

Atkins said Toronto will attempt to reach new contracts with Bautista and Encarnacion in the five days following the World Series, when teams have exclusive negotiating rights with their own free agents.

"They would definitely be priorities for us, and we'll look to do everything that we can to take advantage of that window," Atkins said.

"That's plenty of time to potentially work something out if it's realistic on both ends."

Encarnacion signed a three-year, $29 million (all figures US) deal in in 2013 and is coming off a team option at $10 million.

Bautista signed a $65-million, five-year deal in 2011. Toronto picked up a $14 million option for 2016.

Unclear on Saunders' future

Atkins said the Blue Jays are still pondering what to do with Saunders, who hit a career-high 24 home runs this season and was an All-Star for the first time.

"We're still working through that one," Atkins said. "It's not quite as clear."

Saunders was hitting .298 when he won the all-star final vote spot. HIs average slumped to .253 by the end of the season.

The price of a qualifying offer this year is $17.2 million. The offer can be made through the fifth day after the World Series, and a player has a week after that to accept.

If a team makes a qualifying offer to a player who signs a major league contract with another club before the June amateur draft, his former club receives a draft pick as compensation at the end of the first round.

None of the 34 qualifying offers was accepted in the first three years of baseball's current collective bargaining agreement, but Colby Rasmus (Houston), Matt Wieters (Baltimore) and Brett Anderson (Los Angeles Dodgers) accepted among the 20 players who received offers last winter.

Toronto's remaining free agents include right-hander Joaquin Benoit, left-hander Brett Cecil, right-hander R.A. Dickey, right-hander Scott Feldman, right-hander Gavin Floyd, and catcher Dioner Navarro.

Right-hander Jason Grilli has a $3 million club option for 2017. Atkins called Grilli's option "seemingly as near to a no-brainer to pick up as you can get."

Toronto still controls closer Roberto Osuna, AL ERA leader Aaron Sanchez and four other starters from the rotation that posted a league-low 3.64 ERA.

"We're fortunate that we have five starting pitchers returning that we feel good about because that area of the market seems to not quite as strong as some other areas," Atkins said. "The areas that we are going to be looking to fill, there seem to be some numbers there."

Atkins said discussions have begun on an extension for manager John Gibbons, who will be in the final season of a two-year contract in 2017. All of Toronto's coaches will return in 2017 with the exception of assistant hitting coach Eric Owens. He had been with the Blue Jays since the beginning of the 2015 season.

I would try to re-sign Benoit, Cecil, Floyd and Navarro. The rest can walk. Only Navarro would be a concern to me if they weren't re-signed.

I'm kind of iffy on Brett Cecil - didn't have a great season though he did pick it up a bit in the play-offs. Really happy to hear that Grilli was a 'no brainer'.

Cleveland is continuing to Rock. 6-0 victors in game 1.

Yeah...........they put on a great show last night. Kluber was really outstanding and Lindor continues to delight. I'm actually cheering for the Cubbies since they have an even longer absence from the WS and a win then the Tribe. That said, no matter who wins history will be made.

I usually cheer for AL unless they really suck (Yankees, Red Sox or last year's Royals). I am also a baseball traditionalist which means the Cubs should always lose.

Was a tad worried about Jake's pitching in the first couple of innings..............then the bats came to life for the Cubbies and he settled down. Almost the reverse of yesterday's game so far. Good to see Chicago ahead 5 zip in the 5th. GO CUBBIES!

Ludlow got me interested in the Cubbies - hadn't paid them any mind until he started writing about them. Did a bunch of reading about their history and their record in the play-offs and their inability to get to the WS reminded me a bit of my Riders. Seemed a good fit.

Yeah Cubbies............only allowed 5 hits in the game and tied the series.

Blue Jays got themselves another slugger today

The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly made their first major signing of the off-season acquiring designated hitter Kendrys Morales.

Morales put up a .263/.327/.468 line last season with 30 home runs and 93 RBI for the Kansas City Royals. He was not tendered a qualifying offer by the team, meaning the Blue Jays will not give up any draft pick compensation as a result of the signing.

Jimmy Fallon invites Blue Jays' Joe Biagini on the Tonight Show for a high-five
First posted: Saturday, November 19, 2016 01:01 PM EST | Updated: Saturday, November 19, 2016 01:36 PM EST
Jimmy Fallon doesn't like to leave you hanging -- especially if you happen to be a Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher.
The Tonight Show host said during the monologue for Friday's show that he had been taking some criticism for missing a high-five with an audience member and he decided to make things right.
That audience member just so happened to be Blue Jays reliever Joe Biagini.
So he had the pitcher, who's just coming off his rookie season, back on the show to set things right.

Brett Cecil is now a St. Louis Cardinal if you believe the stuff coming off the sports ticker.

Cardinals gain..............Jays loss? Big topic on Tim and Sid today, IRBS. Left-handed relievers at premium in the league..........and the Jays trade away Brett..............? Wish him all the best. Really beginning to wonder what this team will look like come spring.

So Jays are after Fowler. It will be a good fit given the loss of both Encarnacion and Batista. Hopefully they land him. The whole Edwin scenario is weird. I think he wanted to stay but get some money. He got surprised by how fast the Jays moved on and expected back and forth. Now he is pretty much going to be scrambling to find a new home. I am not particularly happy with how the Jays handled it but I guess it is their choice. The strange part of the whole thing is apparently they are talking to Batista now. If they had to sign one, it should have been Edwin. They are weak at 1B next season although they do have a free agent signing to platoon with Smoak.
