Caracel Kid makes a good point. War is messy and when you are outgunned then you have to take on other measures. It happened in the American Revolution, it has happened througout history.

Now some insurgents are just plain terrorists. However, most just want to get rid of American forces. Therefore they should be considered an opposition force, as well as the Americans.

Don't even attempt to become a revisionist with the American Revolution, there were very few deaths on either side in the American Revolution, and all of them were on the battlefield.

But, since you touched the subject, you are implying the colonialists were terrorizing other colonialists to somehow make the Brits surrender?

There aren't "some" insurgents terrorizing, all insurgents attack the civilian population, however I agree that they are attempting to get rid of the Americans.

You sure? 100%

Now there are some insurgents that attack civilians. COuld be a majority, probably is but there is no evidence.

But there are others, individuals or small groups that target government and foreign military. Through gun battles, or bombs.

I think it's kind of amusing how people, like certain posters in the first page, will immediately see the word "terrorist" and say "Oh ho, lock-em up, them darn badguys!" I'm not saying that there aren't geniune terrorists who deserve to be punished, but it's really dumb to go off and prejudge without knowing anything about the situation.

I don't claim to be an expert on the Sri Lanka situation, and I certainly don't agree with some methods used by the LTTE, but all the same, it's odd that the things the Sri Lankan gonvernment (sinhalese) have done, some equally as horrible, are unnoticed and passed off.

Exactly, good post. People don't forget that the Tamil Tigers are trying to fight for the rights of Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Now I have never been to Sri lanka, but from some news reports, the conflict is because of discrimination that the Tamil community face from the Sinhalese community in Sri Lanka.

You might not like their actions, but they are fighting for a cause.

Another example would be the palestinians and the Israelis. People say, damn Palestinians for doing what you do, but they are trying to fight for a homeland because they are not citizens in Israeli. There children are shot on the way to school, and the Arab population in Israeli is treated as second or third-hand citizens.

Terrorist is used to often for politicial gains in whatever nation you come from because you either have ties to one or the other side in the particular conflict.
