Now some insurgents are just plain terrorists. However, most just want to get rid of American forces. Therefore they should be considered an opposition force, as well as the Americans.
Don't even attempt to become a revisionist with the American Revolution, there were very few deaths on either side in the American Revolution, and all of them were on the battlefield.
But, since you touched the subject, you are implying the colonialists were terrorizing other colonialists to somehow make the Brits surrender?
There aren't "some" insurgents terrorizing, all insurgents attack the civilian population, however I agree that they are attempting to get rid of the Americans.
