RE: Time To Replace our G

Why? The transition would cost billions and there would be no real savings once it was done. I'm not a monarchist, could really care less about inbred rich people on another continent, but I really don't see the point.

We need to deal with some real systemic problems in our system. Copying the US system, which is the model always suggested here, is ridiculous because their system is likely the only semi-functional democracy more broken than ours and Britain's (same basic system).

Keep the GG, bring in proportional representation, and move towards getting rid of patronage appointments.

With the ways things seem to be going I wouldn't be surprised if someone suggets replacing Canada's position as a British Commenwealth with that of a Commenwealth of France.

Your ideas are absurd! Try visiting Ontario and you'll see how English language dominates this country. Get a grip!

Excuse me but I did visit Ontario. I visited Ottawa where all the signs are french first then english and practically everyone speaks french.

Well, I had no idea Ottawa represented the whole province of Ontario. Second of all, your comment about signs being in French first then English demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the French language.

Let's take a highway sign for example. Wellington Street, the street parliament hill is on is calle Rue Wellington in French, so when they put this on a sign it reads "Rue Wellington Street". So yes technically the sign is in French first and then English, but that is only because a lot of French is formulated in the reverse of English.

About saying that practically everyone speaks French, this is true because practically everyone is billingual. If you really researched demographics, a small proportion of the population of Ottawa is ethnic French.

What did you expect Ottawa to be like? I mean the city straddles the Ontario/Quebec border, of course it is very French. The French did not place the capital there, it was the ENGLISH Queen Victoria.

Becoming a republic would not remove us from the British Commonwealth, we would be like India or South Africa. As for this French Commonwealth, no such thing exists, but if there was such a thing, I think it would be appropriate to be part of that. France was the first founding European nation of Canada.

Actually, we are already a member of the closest there is to a French commonwealth...le Francophonie. It's an organisation of French-speaking nations, generally former colonies of France.

I would think that 60% of all her expenses are for "security".

She stays at a five-star hotel because it is "secure".

It costs us money to watch our leaders hide from the rest of us.

Maybe it would be cheaper just to rent a Govenor General?
Maybe we could outsource the job to some starvin' Bifafrin?

Calm

I like your view on things, Calm.

A 5-star hotel has gotta be the most secure place to stay!! NOT!!!! The position isn't really required, as the Queen does not exercise any power. She just maintains the Gov. Gen. so she has the ability to do so.

Why should we have to ask the Queen to have elections? Get rid of the old hag!

I agree but I am not impressed with who is in line to replace her. Too bad they could not skip a generation.

Plus just think how much it will cost us when she dies as we will have to "buy" new printers and such to change our money.
