Just because her enormous budget was trimmed ,Ms>Clarkson has threatened to stop the annual kid's party at the residence.I hope she is visited on Christmas Eve by the 3 ghosts from "A Christmas carol". It's time to rid ourselves of this useless waste of taxpayers monies-Adrienne Clarkson!

Definitely,
her presence is just a reminder of the plutocracy that once plagued our nation (Monarchy). Why should the average person pay a bill for someone to act like royalty. If any of you conservative people are claiming that the GG is a part of our heritage then you can pay the bill because I don't want to give a cent. It's time to oust all of the redundant and anachronistic elements of Canada and divert the funds to health care or education. Scare those ghosts out of Rideau Hall.

That post must go. Man I could not believe how much money she spent on various adventures around Canada and the world. Not to mention re modeling her "official residence".

I believe she actually thinks she is a Queen, she sure lives like one. Pretty good for an ex CBC host. I really do not know how she got the job to begin with.

I am also curious how she managed to get the job, anybody have any clues or ideas? On your other note: A republic of Canada is a possibility, me or someone else should start a thread about that soon. There are pros and cons.

Sorry I missed the original point to the thread, I replied to subdiscussions. Anyways, how disgusting can you get? Why would somebody dream of ruining Christmas for children? While I'm not religious, I understand the whole idea of giving at Christmas and she's not. Someone like that should not hold the position of Governor General if they are going to embarass us like that.

I don't. I was suprised she was appointed. I just knew her as a TV host. But yet again it is a "reward" job like the senate, so I guess no qualifications are needed?!?!?

Media and Government go hand in hand, no1. Take a look at CTV's entertainment host. It's rooney's son Ben or Brian or something  I wish I was in a political family, I might make a TV host ;D

Our system is so messed up. The Queen appoints the GG with advice from the PM. The PM appoints senators if he wants. Anyone remember 'rooney and GST. The senate didn't rubber stamp the lower houses bill so he appointed more senators to push the bill through. I'm surprised our system works at all sometimes.

This woman a former CBC employee (shouldn't that be your first clue) and her equally useless husband have done enormous damage to what was once the good offices and auspices of the GG, to the point I doubt many Canadians would lament the loss of this once historic tradition. Then again, maybe that's her goal.

Actually her husband is a great author.....calling him useless is a bit of a stretch. Was the GG office ever that great? It is a position that theoretically holds far too much power in terms of modern politics. Its past is based on near dictatorship ie(commands the army, can dissolve governments, call kick out ministers, etc). It underscores the fact that in the past the British thought of us a backward colonials that can't run our own country.

RE: Time To Replace our G

The GG should be kept. Clarkson has also done a lot of good there as a representative of soft power. She has represented the arts and Canadian culture to a great extent.

Spending? That needs limits. We have to keep in mind that if we are sending representatives, not just the GG, to represent Canada there are going to be some pretty high bills though. You don't take people to lunch at Mickey D's and you don't hold meetings in a room at the Motel 6 when you are in a position like that.

We need to accept that and then set some reasonable limits based on what we expect from a GG.

The redecorating of all official houses should come out of the pockets of whoever is living in them. That goes for the houses of the PM and the leader of the opposition and everybody else who moves to Ottawa in an official capacity.

Cuts can be made to travel budgets...four star hotels are nice enough, we shouldn't pay for that fifth star and there is no reason why these people can't travel in the back of the plane with rest of us cattle.

We need the position of Governor General though. An effective GG is a great expression of soft power...kind of a floating ambassador. That, like it or not, costs money.

Good point but I think 40 million is a bit too much...maybe its just me.

So do I...like I said, we need limits. The danger is that if we cut back too far and then GG can't do their job properly, then it really does become a waste of money.

I'd also like to see the Governor General appointed by all of Parliament in a secret ballot. Let the Canadian people nominate 5 or 6 candidates based on their qualifications, then pick somebody from there for a 6 year term.

It would do away with the patronage that has traditionally tainted the post.

RE: Time To Replace our G

A whole other issue. I'm against the EEE model, but I do think it needs to be reformed, along with the rest of Parliament.

Start a thread on it and I'll join in.

Look who's come to break up the momentum...

Clarkson has been a lousy representative of soft power.

Her appointment as Governor General had nothing to do with merit and everything to with novelty. It was pure grandstanding on the part of Jean Chretien to have as his choice the first Asian, the first Immigrant, and the first refuge to rise to most symbolically powerful position in Canada.

Sorry Jean, you will always be better remembered for the time you strangled that protester...

During the American presidential visit Bush didn't even take note of her. As he walked down the red carpert with Clarkson at his side, W was literally talking through her "soft powerfulness" to the American ambassador futher abreast.

If the novelty factor had tipped in favour of appointing a drag queen instead, complete with heay rouge and a tiara, perhaps Georgie boy would have paid attention...

Clarkson has done a great job representing herself.

Remember those haughty Double Exposure parodies of Clarkson on CBC radio: "Hello, I'm Adrienne Clarkson... and YOU'RE not."

All I can say is thank goodness the job wasn't given to her ultra conceited sister-in-law, Senator Vivienne Poy.
