“And then, there is the CFL, where the Montreal Alouettes reportedly hold his rights.

“I say, ‘you never know until you try,’ said Matt Dunigan, a retired quarterback who is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, as well as a CFL analyst with TSN.

The arm strength should not preclude a tryout, he said.”

I think he's a pretty good QB.

Agreed, Eagle. Whether or not he is the 'type' of QB needed in our league is another question - but it sure would be fun if he came up for a try-out and who knows, maybe he could find a home here too as so many great American QBs have in the past.

I'm surprised he didn't find a home in the NFL. His situation kind of reminds me of Doug Flutie's football career.

I was too, Eagle. No real explanation given.......lots of rumors and innuendo but nothing of substance. Who knows, maybe their loss could be our gain!

Kind of interesting that when it comes to football, Americans are brought up to Canada but when it comes to hockey, the opposite is usually true.

A top quarterback.. that is a proven qb in the CFL.. and they are really quite different in skill sets than those of the NFL.. can earn about $500k a year.. which ain't bad.. even in the USA.. but it just doesn't sound that great next to the $20 million that top NFL quarterbacks get BEFORE the corporate sponsorships kick in and could likely double that. Really a 2nd year journeyman safety can earn 500k in the NFL. Basicly most American players end up in the CFL because they love to play the game.

There will always be pay inequity between the leagues, CS.........simply because our league is so small compared to the NFL. But for whatever reason NFL QBs and players come to Canada they are welcome. I will always thank the alignment of stars that brought Ronnie Lancaster to my beloved Riders.

And 500K is not a bad salary at all.

They killed Flutie eventually too. If you don't look or act like Tom Brady, your football carreer at QB in the NFL is limited.

I agree there as well. Flutie led the Buffalo Bills to a 10-5 season and the Bills replaced him as they went into the playoffs in which they were knocked out immediately. That is how Doug was treated. Canada liked him though.

I think Flutie had a better arm/passing acumen. Tebow brings something special in that he is almost a fullback and will be really hard for the guys in the secondary to contain, if he can evade the rush/D-line. It would be interesting to see him play in the CFL. If he can play here and develop his passing game, he could possibly return to the NFL in the future, if he wanted to.

And Coldstream, last year the league minimum in the NFL was 800K. Not trying to take away from 500K being a decent living for all of us outside professional athletics but its just over half of what Tebow will make, even sitting on someone's bench.

Very few NFL quarterbacks have been successful in the CFL. The only ones I can think of were Warren Moon and Doug Flutie and they both started in the CFL and then moved to the NFL. (Where Moon did very well and it is debatable whether Flutie did...)

TT's problem is lack of a quick release and spontaneity. In college he executed game plans very well. And, of course, he was well known for his personality which remains exemplary. I always enjoyed watching him in his days as a Gator - he's a great human human being and I wish I had the chance to meet him as does everyone else. But I suspected that he was not true NFL material for his inability to improvise and his limited quickness. In truth, I saw him as a possible h-back who could likely execute an option should an opening be found down field. Still he did win a few games (10 with 1 playoff match) and proved he deserved to put on the NFL uniform. The average career of an NFL player is only 4 years and he has already played for three. I hope for his sake and for the charitable causes that he supports that he may at least one more year in the NFL even if it is in the form of an auxiliary role.

CFL? Despite lack of lateral quickness, I think he can make it there. Whatever happens next, I wish him the best.

Apparently you aren't a fan of the Riders or you would know that Ronnie Lancaster was very successful as both a player and a coach in the CFL. Here's a few more for you.

CFL to NFL: Moon, Flutie, Gilchrist among stars in both circuits - NFL - ESPN

The minimum guaranteed salary for a second year player in the NFL in 2013 is about $480k - 550k.. you have to have been in league for 7 or 8 years to get the 800k guarantee.

I think Flutie earned about a $1 million in his last couple of years with the Argonauts.. but at that point he was someone proven to be a Chamionship calibre qb.. and most importantly he was big Box Office.. showing significant increases in attendance at home and on the road. I think Tebow could be the same, and could warrant the same salary or more.. but he'd have to prove himself as someone who consistently pivoted winning teams like Calvillo in Montreal.

I'd rather do that than sit on a Bench getting the same money for doing nothing.. especially someone of Tebow's character. It seems clear now that he'll never be the starting QB on an NFL team.

Tebow signed on with the New England Patriots.. in a contract that as far as i can tell.. guarantees him only the minimum NFL salary.. with incentives for games played.. and like all NFL contracts has no guarantee of length. Belichick has a great eye for quarterbacks.. but i still think he'll be cut before the start of the season.

Belichick has a talent for getting performance out of players. Tebow won't QB, but he might have other ways to help the team.
