Early this morning thousands of people gathered at Stonehenge in Wiltshire to watch the Sun rise on summer solstice - the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The usual collection of partygoing youths, families and neo-Pagans partied and worshipped as our parent star made its early appearance in the sky.

Brits gathering at Stonehenge to mark the summer solstice is something which seems to have been happening for millennia as the ancient monument is aligned with the rising summer solstice Sun and the setting winter solstice Sun, so whilst we don't know exactly why ancient Brits built it we do know it must have something to do with the solstices.
