Theresa May is deluded – a truly great deal would be the Brexit we all voted for

It all looks a bit too much for Mrs May. I do not doubt her essential decency, patriotism and sense of duty.

But even after Friday, I have come to doubt her ability to get Brexit done.

I doubt her ability to say to Brussels: “Bog off.”

Tony Parsons Theresa May is deluded – a truly great deal would be the Brexit we all voted for

Any euphoria around the Prime Minister's modest breakthrough with the EU on Friday would be misplaced

By Tony Parsons, Sun Columnist
10th December 2017

I’M dreaming of a real Brexit – just like the one we voted for.

Oh, what agonies have been endured just to get to Friday morning’s modest breakthrough, allowing talks on trade to begin.

Theresa May and David Davis this week met with EU chiefs to agree a deal to progress with Brexit

Any euphoria would be misplaced. The EU has thrown Theresa May a bone before she had no choice but to walk away from the table — that’s all.

Brexit is a deal still light years from being done.

In 2016, 17.4million of us voted for a return to control over our economy and the trade deals we cut with the rest of the world, a return to control over our borders, laws, sovereignty and destiny.

We were told by our then Prime Minister that our decision was final and irrevocable.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron told us there would be no going back on the Brexit decision

David Cameron looked us in the eye and said, choose carefully, little people, because there will be no going back.

It has not worked out like that.

Now even an ex-Prime Minister, Tony Blair, feels bold enough to gob in the face of democracy and boast that he is working to “reverse Brexit”.

Friday’s deal gives Theresa May what she needs — not for Brexit itself but for her political survival.

But this is not about any politician’s career. This is about our country’s future.

Brexit is not about Theresa May’s career, but our country’s future

Very soon we will be hearing more lame excuses about why the country can’t have the freedom it voted for in larger numbers than we have ever voted for anything.

If Mrs May can’t make Brexit a reality then it is time for her to call the removal men into Downing Street and make way for someone who can.

We are sick of seeing a British Prime Minister get down on her knees before Brussels.

Why was the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland ever such a deal-breaker?

The wealthiest country in Europe, Norway — which is not in the EU — shares a non-hard border with Sweden, which is in the EU.

If the non-EU Norwegians and the EU Swedes can manage an open border, then it should never have been beyond the wit of the UK and Ireland to work out a border that suits everyone.

But, of course, there are many people who relish seeing Brexit falter and fail.

There are foreign politicians such as little Leo Varadkar, the puffed-up Irish premier, who actively enjoys seeing a British PM squirm.

It should never have been beyond the wit of the UK and Ireland to work out a border that suits everyone

And there are cynical souls closer to home, like Labour, who view Brexit as a blunt instrument with which to beat the wicked Tories.

And it all looks a bit too much for Mrs May. I do not doubt her essential decency, patriotism and sense of duty.

But even after Friday, I have come to doubt her ability to get Brexit done.

I doubt her ability to say to Brussels: “Bog off.”

Why do we crawl to these creeps? The UK is the second-largest contributor to the EU. We have poured billions into the gravy train.

Like a bitter dumped boyfriend, the ruffled feathers of Michel Barnier, Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker are understandable.

But our people — free, democratic citizens of a country that has not bent the knee to any foreign invader for 1,000 years — voted to leave. And that is what must happen.

The ruffled feathers of Michel Barnier and his fellow EU bigwigs are understandable

The Brexit deniers try to make it complicated. But it is really, really not complicated. It is as brutally simple as can be.

The British people either get the real Brexit they voted for or receive the message that their vote means nothing. And democracy no longer matters in this country.

I ask the BBC, Tony Blair, Nick Clegg, the House of Lords, Keir Starmer, Vince Cable, Jeremy Corbyn, Bob Geldof and all the rest of the Brexit deniers — do you REALLY want to send that message to the British people?

It would be a very dangerous message to send.

the lie that brits voted overwhelmingly for brexit.

This is what Mr Parsons said:

"Very soon we will be hearing more lame excuses about why the country can’t have the freedom it voted for in larger numbers than we have ever voted for anything."

Now could you kindly tell me which part of that sentence is a lie?

It is no lie, that is the largest vote count of any in British history.

More Brits voted Leave than in any other referendums, or for any other political party. Ever.

Read more, post less.

the vote was 48-51 - in fact not a large enough majority to advance most parliamentary procedures.

you seem to like to omit the fact that almost as many voted against it as voted for it. IN fact more people voted against Brexit than have ever voted against anything ever

And it isn't like I have any skin in the game - like literally everyone else in the world I could not care less what happen to Britain or Europe.

Ireland and Scotland both voted against it.

Hopefully they won't be dragged through this ridiculous process against their wishes.

Your post is completely irrelevant.
The vote was held to a standard of 50% +1.
Same as referendums in Quebec, and the referendum in Scotland.

Do you understand the concept of win - lose, because you seem to think losing is winning.
I'll bet you support Hillary too.

More irrelevance.

Quebec could not have separated on a simple majority

you are going to have to come up with a better lie than that.

But I do find all this lying about the Brexit numbers entertaining.

So we just drag the English and Welsh and the majority of the people of the UK as a whole through a process against their wishes instead?
