On 3rd September 1939 Britain declared war on Germany, starting the deadliest war in history.

Around 75 million people died in the conflict.

In 1940, after Nazi Germany conquered most of continental Europe, it attempted a peace deal with Britain.

The British refused the offer.

In anger, the Germans then attempted to invade Britain by air. Britain then had the world's largest navy so Hitler decided to go over it.

Head of the Luftwaffe Hermann Goering thought the RAF would be defeated within three days, but he was wrong.

What followed in 1940 was the largest aerial battle in history - the Battle of Britain

Despite ever increasing numbers coming up against them, the RAF somehow managed to fend off the would-be invaders.
