On 11th December 1936, King Edward VIII - the great-uncle of King Charles III - announced his abdication to the British people and the British Empire.
Upon his abdication, his younger brother - King Charles III's grandfather - became King George VI.
The former King Edward VIII died in Paris in 1972. However, his niece Princess Elizabeth would still have become Queen - albeit in 1972 - as the former King died childless and she would have been his heir after her father died in 1952.
