RE: The Greateast Canadia

I'm here now.

I supported Tommy Douglas throughout the whole contest.

Douglas is the father of Canadian medicare and several of our other social programs. He got those programs installed without ever being Prime Minister or sitting in an elected party.

The programs, especially medicare, have defined the values of Canada for generations. It is not so much the programs themselves but what they represent...working together, pooling resources, and looking after each other.

Douglas is also the father of Canadian socialism. His work bringing the NDP first to the forefront in Saskatchewan, then to the national stage helped shape the political spectrum in this country more than any other figure of his time. Douglas' influence has gone beyond the NDP, helping to inform the policies of Liberals and red tories since the 1960's.

This may be way late, but I just noticed this. May I ask how Alexander Graham Bell is Canadian?

And I would have picked John A MacDonald, I think he influenced Canadian society then, and I believe it's still there today.

Bell did much of his work in Newfoundland and is buried there. Of course Newfoundland didn't become part of Canada until 1949 and Bell specified that he wanted "Citizen of the United States" on his gravestone.

Original list topic started with:
1 Tommy Douglas
2 Terry Fox
3 Dr. Frederick Banting
4 Pierre Elliott Trudeau
5 Don Cherry
6 Lester B. Pearson
7 David Suzuki
8 Sir John A. Macdonald
9 Wayne Gretzky
10 Alexander Graham Bell
My personal list:
1. Sir John A Macdonald, He pushed through the railroad that made this country possible. A strong leader when we needed one.
2. Lester B. Pearson, won the Nobel Peace Price, gave us our flag.
3. Alexander Graham Bell, Bell is claimed by three countries, Canada, Scotland, and the U.S. He invented the telephone, he was involved in the developement of Canada's first airplane, the Silver Dart.
4.Terry Fox, inspired millions, Every year Terry Fox runs raise millions for cancer research. The total must be close to reaching half a billion by now.
5.Dr. Frederick Banting, Co-inventer of insulin, Nobel prise winner.
6.Tommy Douglas, Though socialized medicine was a plank in the old CCF party, I think we can say that Tommy Douglas was the father of medicare in this country.
7.Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Brought home the constitution, gave us our charter of rights. Some would say he had the mandate to do more.
8. 7 David Suzuki,
9. Wayne Gretzky, had more God-given talent for the game of hockey than most but does that talent put him in the top ten Canadians?
10. Don Cherry, ???
