Who else has seen a coralation in the lack of respest, accountablity and general conduct of children and the complete degradation of programming aimed at them?

The hereos are gone and the vilian types are glorified.

Am I wrong?

in the past i could have looked at the flag in the corner and commented on the cultural issues, or at least told i know nothing of your culture and cannot comment. Since i can't i can tell you the same is true in Britain, although i don't know about childrens TV except that ive seen things brought back purely for commercial gain... eg shaggy and scooby... that show is terrible compared to the thought-provoking original scoobydoo.

No contest. Media has a huge influence on kids. Celebrities are their gods and tv their temples. All I can hope is that their parents and schools are up to the challenge of making the kids see the difference between image and reality.
Clearly, the western world in its present form refuses to bear responsibility for its conduct as far as minors are concerned. No wonder the kiddies grow a little bolder each year.

Have to agree here - our children are being molded by the culture offered by electronics rather than our basic learned instincts which I believe are primarily governed by humanitarian concern.

We humans seem to be losing our effectiveness in how our children are being taught to think, and while I rail on about the Madrassas in Pakistan bending young male minds into murder and mayhem, we are in
our western "civilized nations" doing the same to the young in our lands.

We are now seeing a generation in teaching positions having "graduated" from the new age kind of thinking which I find to be self gratifying and shallow. Teachers and building a new age group on these same faulty values.

The mores of what built the great countries in which we live are being eroded by forces we have control over, but still unwittingly allow into our homes because we do not pause to see the content, believing it to
be nourishing and enriching for the young. This is "pap" being fed to us.

Time to recapture our young and stop leaving it to "others" to give our children the necessary equipment
with which to survive in our new world.... Or lose what has been one of the most successful self-governed
projects our history has known - democracy and the right to think for oneself and to be able to express it freely.

WOW, you hit that nail on the head, and drove it through the board.

I refuse to let my kids see movies like Jackass, and I'm called "Shrek", as in an ogre. I take them to see Black Hawk Down and I'm a poor parent.

I knew several of the young men that did not come back from Somalia alive and felt that my boys should see what they went through there. The documentary I showed them, as telling as it was, didn't give them the there and now effects, that Hollywood seems so apt at recreating, with a lil flare. It was more the personal aftermath.

But Jackass? Not in my house.

When I was a kid I watched The A Team, Tour Of Duty, and Miami Vice, and I turned out okay. Those shows never showed the consequences of violence yet I didn't get into allot of fights or hurt anyone. I think kids are bad because they are not raised properly, not because of what they watch on TV or see in video games. Parents don’t want to take the responsibility themselves.

I had the misfortune of spending down time a few years back with an ailment which demanded staying off work. In boredom I watched television and learned what awful stuff is being put out by advertisers and programming for the women (and children) of our world.

Especially offensive to me are the snotty moms and even snottier kids putting their fathers down as if dad is a retarded street person they allow into the house as long as he "behaves".

Then kids get to school where it is "wimp and whine" time, teachers terrified to speak up against anything a child does, until the kids begin to put the puzzles together - adults are afraid to challenge them, afraid to punish them, afraid to restrict their goofy kid-like ways..... until they get into trouble.

Who started this "monstrous" method of learning and teaching I don't know but we are creating huge problems down the line - not only for the children we love, but for the nations where children are brought up to believe they are omnipotent and have no consequences in life. Those same kids find out in a terrible moment, they are fragile, they are depressed, and they kill themselves or others...because nobody taught them it could end in an instant.

And parents look around wondering what the hell happened..... "it must have been that kid he was spending time with," they say....looking for answers when deep down in the gut....they know....it was their fear of circumscribing boundaries for their kids....out of love.... taking the heat and anger.... but ultimately gearing their kid to learn about life....with support and backup and always...love.

Parenting is the one top job we are faced with in life - the ultimate work of our survival - teaching the young how to survive and to be flexible and to learn how fragile life really is. Giving money and gifts and clothing and lots of techie gadgets are replacements for the real thing - learning about life.

It is time parenting be honored and placed at the top of our priority list ...
