It's time to legalize sub-machine guns so that we can defend ourselves. Had everyone at that concert been armed with a sub-machine gun, they could all have shot towards the general direction of the hotel in self defense.

The ballistics experts say there's no way one shooter could do this many shots in the time frame of the incident and there are multiple witnesses claiming to have seen shooters in three different positions.

I thought better of you, DB.

LAS VEGAS – The man who unleashed hundreds of rounds of gunfire on a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas had two accessories that could have allowed his semi-automatic rifles to fire rapidly and continuously, as if they were fully automatic weapons, officials said.
Though legally and widely available, the so-called “bump stocks” have attracted scrutiny from authorities and lawmakers in recent years.

A semi-automatic weapon requires one trigger pull for each round fired. With a fully automatic firearm, one trigger pull can unleash continuous rounds until the magazine is empty. The “bump-stock” devices work by manipulating the trigger mechanism extremely rapidly, far faster than a person could do so without them.

"The Las Vegas gunman possessed a little-known device called a "bump stock" that was not widely sold -- until now. Originally created with the idea of making it easier for people with disabilities to shoot a gun, the attachments allow a semi-automatic rifle to mimic a fully automatic weapon by unleashing an entire large magazine in seconds. Now the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history has drawn attention to the devices, which critics say flout federal restrictions on automatic guns.

The stocks have been around for less than a decade. The government gave its seal of approval to selling them in 2010 after concluding that they did not violate federal law.

The device basically replaces the gun's shoulder rest, with a "support step" that covers the trigger opening. By holding the pistol grip with one hand and pushing forward on the barrel with the other, the shooter's finger comes in contact with the trigger. The recoil causes the gun to buck back and forth, "bumping" the trigger.

Technically, that means the finger is pulling the trigger for each round fired, keeping the weapon a legal semi-automatic. The rapid fire does not necessarily make the weapon any more lethal -- much of that would be dependent on the type of ammunition used. But it does allow the person firing the weapon to get off more shots more quickly.

It's unclear how many have been sold. The industry leader, Slide Force, did not return messages seeking comment. But the Abilene, Texas, company's Facebook page is filled with videos extolling its features, including one in which a woman gushed, "It's so easy because once you slid it forward and leaned into it, it just fires." In another video, a man fires off 58 rounds to celebrate his 58th birthday in just 12 seconds."

Had you been paying attention to what concert goers, police, paramedics, singers et al have been saying, no one knew where the gunfire was coming for the first few minutes. Many thought a shooter was lose among the concert goers. The idea of putting sub-machine guns in the hands of terrorized people who haven't a clue where the bullets are coming from is simply insane and your suggestion of shooting in the general direction of the hotel is the product of a deranged mind.

Very good point. When you don't know the direction of the shots, the safest thing to do is to shoot in every direction.

'Spray in the general direction' is the correct term I believe. What is the difference between a machine gun and a sub-machine gun??

A sub-machine gun might be more convenient for day-to-day protection. You can fit it nicely in your backpack as you go about your day.

I think I'll stick to a pistol in a quick release holster. By the time you get it out of said back-pack I could disassemble a pistol and put it back together, load the clip and insert and pull the trigger as many times as needed before you get one round off.

Sub-machine guns can be carried in one hand. If the Gatling Gun is considered a machine gun then original machine gun weighed too much for one man to carry. Hiram Maxim's machine gun weighed in at over 27 kilos, so it was just barely portable.

Another good point. Sling it.

You just never know when it might come in handy.

After this shooting happened yesterday I had a chat with my neighbour, who flew F18s and F14s for the US in both Afganistan and Iraq. He thinks the people (and NRA) spouting arming for self defense is nuts because it doesn't work. 'When you get shot at you run for cover, not for a gun'. He said even he and other pilots naturally reacted that way in war. 'I had a lot of firepower but when things are exploding outside of your plane you get the hell out of there, not hunt the shooter down.'

Just thought I'd share his point. Seemed like a good one.

Really? Nevada is an open carry state. I wonder how many of the concert goers in Vegas were carrying. If they were it did not seem to help them much did it?

You mean he didn't just start randomly dropping bombs, shooting missiles, and firing his cannon?

You may want to wait until everyone is doing that or you may get some unwanted attention.

No telephones??
Save a lot of time and energy needed to explore the facts.

But if everyone is doing it, then it just becomes fashionable to strut around with a sub-machine gun, at the mall, at the ball game, at the restaurants and at concerts. Be prepared!

I believe the way it works is somebody with a clear shot takes it. Emergency over. Pilots are not experts at street fighting, they are more interested in putting most of the building into the street.
Taking out the hotel would have killed how many people??

Yeah you're a big man with training as a first responder...

What everyone needs is another guy on the roof with a weapon with a bunch of gun touting crazies looking to become a hero..

The police acted professionally and ended the carnage..

Yup next time hand MHz a long rifle and send him to the roof... then start counting how long he survives.

Love how these arm chair Rambos think they can do a better job than the police who train for this..

No telephones??.

A voice on a phone has no emotion, this way they can see her reactions, emotions and read into them.
