Nope, Hubble is too small as well.

Hubble can see or resolve objects 60 or 70 meters across on the moon.

Seriously though, there is some discussion that the material part of the flags (there are more than one) may have been destroyed by UV over the years.

Doc--lately Ive only been astral travelling to your bed. Have you noticed? :)

Here is a recent landmark device for amateur astronomers:

This little gadget has GPS and a little built in computer that lets you point it at a star or whatever and it will tell you what you are looking at. This has been out for a couple years now and I have been lobbying Santa for one of these for the last year.......They cost about $400 plus tax and shipping

Sanata should be able to spring for one of those. ;)

My wife and I will get the chance to go to an older observatory soon. Hoher list, near bonn. Never having been to a moderately advanced observatory, we are a little excited. :)

I've looked through a few large telescopes and I know how excited I was the first time. I envy you....I hope the weather is right for you.

Tuesday, October 9, 2007 Giant telescope in Chile to look for light in dark places

(CBC) - A giant telescope capable of peering into the darker regions of space and producing images ten times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope will be constructed in Chile, astronomers announced last week.
Scheduled for completion in 2016, the Giant Magellan Telescope will be constructed at Cerro Las Campanas, near the city of La Serena in central Chile.

This will probably mean the end of the Hubble Space Telescope but completion is still a ways off.

Here is a photo of my son's observatory in his back yard. Right now he has a 10" Meade LX200 Schmidt Cass in it. The telescope pier is set in about half a cubic yard of concrete. The little 8x8 building is just mounted separately on concrete. blocks. He is in the process of motorizing the dome to make it move in sinc with the telescope.

If you took the largest telescopes on Mount Palomar or Mona Kea in Hawaii and made those telescopes five times as big, you still wouldn't be able to see the flag on the moon....Sorry:smile:
Thats because there is no flag , its all a hoax.

Here is the telescope on the tripod before the pier went in.

Living close to an obsevatory we have to deal with light polution

Light polution is not as big a problem as it used to be. With the new digital cameras we no longer have to use long exposure times. That picture of the moon took a second and a half in Vancouver. You rarely get a situation where you can't look at something. The biggest problem we have to deal with is cloud cover. Vancouver is about as bad as anywhere for cloud cover.

Cloud cover is the reason the telescope was built in that area . The skies are clear or observable 2 nights out of three. We can see the aurora Boreas clearly here when it happens.
