QUEBEC (CP) - Few Canadian families will ever see the $1,200 promised by the Conservative government to subsidize childcare costs, says New Democrat Leader Jack Layton.
Layton says a fraction of the promised money will end up in parental pockets by the time the taxman takes a cut.
"Mr. Harper should tell the truth on this topic," Layton told students at Laval University.
"He'll tax that $1,200 and there will only be a fraction of that money left for parents."
Layton praised Quebec's daycare program which is heavily subsidized by the provincial government. He said the federal government should help the province pay for it.
Instead of paying families, Layton said the government should give tax credits to families and pay subsidies to build daycare facilities.

Conservatives would like you too believe, but it is taxable and most people will never see a dime of this money. Especially ones on welfare or on the lowest income bracket.
