Spending the weekend at friends in Phoenix and we had a discussion last nights about overall taxes. He’d gladly pay more tax. He says Americans spend a massive amount on the military where the average American doesn’t get a direct benefit. Canada spends more per capita on education and health care where he thinks the average Canadian sees a direct benefit. He knows teachers down here that have to get part time jobs in Walmart so they can live. It pisses him off to see retirees from Canada coming down here and living far better than retirees from Minnesota or Michigan. He says that, despite the higher taxes Canadians pay, they get better overall value for the taxes paid. I tend to agree with him. He,s also a Republican that hates Trump

Well, seeing as how Arizona is a reliably deep-red state, your buddy's getting what his state votes for.

If your friend really can't fathom a direct benefit perhaps he could try thinking and note the almost limitless indirect benefits that he enjoys as the result of the U.S. taking responsibility where nobody else is willing and spending the money required to provide him with the quality of life he has. Freedom ain't free. It would be nice if other country's pulled their weight but they don't. I agree that teachers are seriously underpaid. I suspect your friend is just as seriously overpaid. It's kind of nice having a neighbor that foots the bill isn't it.

There are usually some strings attacked when something seems to good to be true. In this case it would be 'big cables' rather 'a few strings'. One being they buy all out exported oil at $50/bbl below world market price, sweet deal for them, even sweeter for the Dutch Oil Companies that did all the construction work.

Also tell your friend that his tax money goes to defend Canada through the U.S military.

Canada an afford its social programs because it uses the might of the U.S military to defend itself.

Parasitism exists all over the world.

Unfortunately most Canadians don't admit what we do, or thinkcwe can do it forever.

Umm....I think the point is that the value we are getting per dollar spent is better in the US. So ya, if he got to live like a Canadian, he’d probably be happy

Defend itself from what, exactly?

Teachers are by no means underpaid. Starting wage is around $47000 + solid gold pension and bennies. Not bad for fresh out of school and only working about 9 months.

Well, from those who would interfere with the free flow of goods as one example. It might be worthwhile to consider the impact on the economy were China to be able to control the sea lanes with a navy that Canada was (is) unable to challenge. BTW, speaking of direct benefits. How about the integrated circuit? Or the technological knowhow that allows Bombardier and Boeing to produce aircraft. Or cell phone technology. Or the internet. Or weather and GPS satellites. Or nuclear medicine. Or microwave ovens. Or duct tape. Or drones. Or digital cameras. Or computers. Or jet engines. Or synthetic rubber tires. Or super glue. Or canned food. Or penicillin. Or wrist watches. Or freeze dried food. Or.................

You mean like Trumpites and their love of tariffs. I don’t think we need an army to defeat them...just get smart people out to vote
