It kept opening web browsers to their site, telling me my "system was under attack". I knew that was crap, but realized something was running without my knowledge. I Googled it, found out it was spyware.

I would suggest installing Ad-Aware or Spybot, they will monitor crap like that and prevent them from installing on your system.

Ad-aware and Spysweeper working in conjunction with each other makes spyware practically non-existant on my computer. The only ones that I have to delete after a check are the tracking cookies that I get from TSN, Spacecast, or ESPN. Nothing major, and easily cleaned. I have not used Spybot in a long time, so I do not know if it is any good anymore.
