OTTAWA - A large majority of Canadians want the UN to give its collective head a shake following weeks of criticism from it over a lack of 'food security' here, delays in repatriating terrorist Omar Khadr, and violating human rights through Quebec's new law to rein in student protesters.
An exclusive Abacus Data survey for QMI Agency has found 68% of respondents say the UN should focus on real human rights tragedies in Syria, Iran, and elsewhere before worrying about Canada.
"There is a sense that I think Canadians recognise that maybe the UN's priorities aren't straight and that, I think, is hurting its reputation," said Abacus president David Coletto, adding that support for the UN is 'lukewarm'.
When Canadians were asked how favourably they view the global talk shop, just 10% say their impression is very favourable, while 37% are only somewhat favourable.
"When you poke and prod Canadians on some of the issues that the UN has dealt with and some of the things it's done, Canadians don't react very positively to it," said Coletto.
In mid-June, Conservative MP Larry Miller called for a review of Canada's UN participation, which could lead to a full reconsideration of its membership - something Canadians don't favour.
The survey found only 28% agreed with Canada reconsidering its UN membership, while 45% disagreed.
Abacus Data conducted its online survey of 1,008 randomly selected adults between June 20 and 23.
Using traditional polling methods, the results would be accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
