Summer School

Since the Conservatives have been wasting so much time on bill C-48 and bill C-38, the government has been staying after school. The House has been sitting until midnight in an attempt to pass a budget amendment that most Canadians favour and a human rights law that would allow people to marry who they want to.

The Conservatives tried to swing a deal last week. They were willing to let the budget amendment pass if the human rights law was put off until the fall. It was a show of cynical homophobia by a party who does not have the power to defeat either bill. The Liberals wavered, but the NDP and the people of Canada turned up the heat.

Now the House isn't just staying after school...they are going to summer school. They will now sit until both of these bills are dealt with. Have you ever been to Ottawa in the summer? It's pretty, but the humidity will kill you.

It's hard for me to have sympathy for them. I live south west of Ottawa, the humidity is even worst here....

Excellent, the much younger Conservative Party may be able to pass a confidence motion for once because everyone else dies.

It's more likely that the Conservatives, used to the arid climate of the west, will pass out from heat exhaustion.

Yes it is...you should move to Alberta.

Still there was no hard commitment made by either Valeri or Martin that would priortize the passing of bill C-38 this sitting. I am getting very tired of Martin's waffling and dithering. First its on, then its off, then its on again...sort of.

Note Martin: GET ON WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Show some backbone and let the Cristo-nazis rot in hell for their decidedly unchristian and immoral and unethical stance!

They would not have to sit in the summer if Harper was not pulling his childish BS all spring.

Bill c-38 will pass and quite easy, Bloc,NDP and all but 30 or so liberals support it. It always bothers me why the right does not like equality.

The one good thing about a summer sitting is that we will be spared all the photo ops of Harper racing from barbecue to barbecue, practicing his "new, improved, friendly, smiling" self.

I doubt this had much to do with Martin. He would have liked to leave it until the fall so he'd have something to whip Harper with. I think that there was a lot of public pressure and a lot of pressure from MPs from the NDP, Bloc, and within the Liberal Party.

Having the bill to extend Parliament tabled is a fairly solid commitment though. I'm not sure if it was meant to be, but once word got out that politicians were going to have to work until they got their job done, it became a commitment. Anybody who votes against it will be villified as being a lazy SOB who isn't doing his/her job.

Childish? Oh wait, you mean his job right? You're right, the opposition SHOULD agree with everything the government does right?

If he was doing job, it would be different. He's not though. It is a rare day indeed when he or anybody else in the Conservative Party asks a question about policy in Question Period. They propose amendments to bills that would make the bill mean the opposite instead of proposing improvements that might pass instead of being ruled out of order. They hold things up in committee.

The Conservatives are trying to keep Parliament from sitting into the summer. I guess that makes them the lazy SOBs that need to villified. Why am I not surprised that it is the Conservative that doesn't want to sit during the summer.
