Summer jobs getting harder to find for Alberta Students

Summer break may be a time for high school and post-secondary students to relax and go on vacation, but times can be tough for those looking for work this season.

With the rising cost of education, most students will try to work as much as they can, but in a tough Alberta economy, the competition will be stiff.

Students may even find themselves going up against their parents.

Overall, the number of positions posted on job search sites is down and with more people wanting work, Peter Harris, Editor-In-Chief of Workoplis.com, says people already working don’t want to leave.

“A lot of older people who would be retired or semi-retired want to keep working and have started to compete with younger workers for the jobs they traditionally would have used as their first jobs in hospitality, sales, and service industries,” he said.

Harris adds, more senior candidates will have an advantage over students because they tend to have a more diverse skill set, have already proven themselves in the job market, and are better at selling their qualities in resumes and interviews.

This leaves students to ask how they can separate themselves from the rest of field.

Harris said younger applicants can’t be picky and must make clear to their potential employers they are willing to work any shift, any time of the day, and any day of the week.

He also suggests, for students who have a hard time finding a job, to possibly seek out work at fairs, festivals, and events which take place at the end of the summer because they may not have hired yet.

What about the 'forget going to school next year and when school starts grab a job and don't ever quit' (unless you already have another one)
