RE: Spain drops its claim

nah wait for it...but I've got a theory about the liberal democrats and the public's perception of them:
(be warned, it's out there....but actually I think theres ome truth in it)

D.Lloyd George was great n'all for introducing old age pensions and benefits, and also inspiring the labour party to devise the NHS, problem is he and his party are percieved and were percieved as signing dodgy agreements with foreign countries which forced the UK to fight in WW1, millions died, the empire was in tatter and it was all because of the liberal's political meddling, and because of this......the Liberal's have played the third party role ever since, it's been so long now the uk population dont know why they dont vote for them, they just dont

lol. They are almost like the New Democrats in Canada, but the New Democrats are actually more like Labour and the LDP is more like the Liberal party so it's a little different.

Thats a pretty good theory. But I'd say it's more of a political one. In most of europe you have a big tent Socialist or social democratic party and then a big tent right ring party. The Social Democrats (Labour) are more intune with these devisions then the Liberal democrats and were able to explote them better by getting workers in mass to vote for them, plus secments of the middle class. Here in Canada I'd actually say the working class has blended well into the middle class and well the devisions arn't well really there. The working class besides the union leadership are not loyal NDP supporters as they would be in the UK or most other European nations. But really I think most of these elections goes to the party which the Middle class is least pissed off with at the time. In the 60's and 70's however many thought the Liberal party would slowly die to allow the NDP to become the big tent centre left party in Canada, but that never happend and really because of FPTP like in the UK the NDP like the LDP suffer greatly even if they have a large percent of the population willing to give them more power.

But I think your onto something there as well to the timing the Liberal party lost their support. Currently the LPD kind of pisses me off with there populist platforms.

yeah the timing of the liberals fall and the rise of the labour party is just too much of a coincidence, but they've shot themselves in the foot for a long time too, just look lately, saking their leader cus he had drink prolems, then getting rid of one candidate cus he's gay.

to be honest, they arent that good anyway, at least at a local level, they were in council for my aunt's area, and it went to pot, school meals went, bus fares tripled, benefits dropped, jobs lost, that might have something to do with it also.

I agree with you, they are out classed by the Torys and Labour. The new Tory leader seems to be form the new generation of leadership of Europe and I'd say he has a very good chance to unseat labour in the next election. Though I don't know most brits views on him as I do not live in the UK nor when I was in Ireland this past summer did I bother to ask ppl about him. lol. But he does appear to have the charisma needed to be the PM. If labour had any balls they would reform the FPTP system which gives them a fake magority and at least put in a 100 or so seats elected by the percentage of the vote. I think that would be right. (MPP)

edit: by the way I found on the net. I didn't bother following up with this and I'd have to look it up and research a little again to find it for you. But one of your Liberal Democrat MP's or canidates had on his website he went to Belford (sp) university. which I looked up and it's one of those universities which you buy your degree from.
