... once you learn to fake it then everything becomes easy.
The Conservatives have spent the last five years building the party brand and doing everything possible to create the impression they're the only game in the country.
- When Harper "invited" David Emerson to join the conservatives before the ballots had even cooled in 2006 it wasn't about giving better representation to the people of Vancouver-Kingsway as Harper claimed(that was their choice not his), it was about giving more credibility to a party that many Canadians still perceived as being on the political fringe.
- Spiking the softwood deal with the Americans down the Canadian industry throats wasn't about standing up for Canadian interests, it was about removing a political thorn and patching up relations with the White House. Even though Canada won every battle in court the Americans still got to keep $1 billion and dictate their terms and they still came back the next year for more. Harper could claim a "victory" though, "look how effective a leader I am".
- The Atlantic Accord: Harper's way of saying "no screw you" to the Maritimes over what he saw as lack of proper support.
- The war in Afghanistan: We keep hearing we're their fighting for democracy and human rights... but we keep hearing that the numbnuts we're keeping in power are corrupt, mentally unbalanced, in the drug trade and torturing and/or killing prisoners. Even high level American communicas support this. Meanwhile the mere presence of foreign troops in the region is bringing together the fundamentlists in both Afghanistan and Pakistan like never before and instead of fighting amoung themselves they're joining forces and threatening to take over a nation with between 30-40 nuclear weapons.
- Openess: It's harder now to get any real information from Canada's government than under teh Liberals, not good when you consider the serious issues that face this nation.
- Environmental issues: It's not about ideology as we keep being told by the far right, it's about science something that's been attacked on both sides of teh border resently. You can only avoid the facts so long before they bite you.
- Sincerity: Learning to fake it can give you an advantage in the short term, but it doens't remove responsibility. A government is more than just a manager or a cheerleader for a nation, it's a custodian of it's past, present and future. And basically lying about all three by being deeply insincere isn't the kind of behaviour we need in a leader.
